Chesham United v Torquay United - VNSL game 5 - 26th August 2024

ArkansasGull wrote: 28 Aug 2024, 01:19 Sounded like a tough game on the radio, anybody have much feedback on how Mussa,is doing 5 games in?
So far, I've found Mussa a very frustrating player. He obviously has tons of ability and can skip past a couple of players with ease.
However, he seems to me to be only concerned with how he looks, rather than playing the right ball to advance play.
A bit of a show-off, if you will.

He'll dance around with the ball, nice dinks and touches, beat a man, then ignore the opportunity to capitalise by laying it off, and he tries to find someone else to beat or goes for the worldy shot or pass, then lose it easily and we're on the back foot.

Quite rightly he has been relegated to the subs bench since the opening game, and this actually may be the best place he can affect a game from, when we need that bit of flair to try and get back into a game.

At the moment IMO a luxury player, who doesn't match his team-mates' work ethic, but if he can become a more effective team player with coaching over the season, we have a real prospect on our hands.

Squad 2024/25

Tomlinson confirmed now as having signed:

Honestly not sure we needed another central defender, we already have ample cover, and Tomlinson for me was culpable for most of our goals last season, so a really poor signing imo

gateman49 wrote: 24 May 2024, 18:15 I was told today that Ryan Law is on the way.
According to Truro's retained list, they had an option on Law's contract, which they have exercised.

So I'd be surprised if he's on his way here, as it would therefore incur a fee, and I doubt we're in the position to be spending like that.

Hamon is out of contract and they've offered him a new deal, same goes for... Matt Buse

I guess those 2 are much more likely

Next season.

If we go by the general consensus that contracts due to end this season end after the final game (ie today).

Add to that the transfer embargo and possibly the inability to re-engage with out of contract players anyway.

Then considering the fact that the administrators are in charge, and tasked with reducing every outgoing cost possible to ensuring the club remain solvent.

I think it is most likely that all players and staff out of contact after today will be released.

So the only players with us next season will be contracted, which I would guess is McGavin, Booth and Archer at the most.

Of course if an offer comes in (especially for McGavin like it did in January) then the administrators would be obliged to sell for sure.

I think the clean broom approach is more of a certainty rather than a preference we can debate

Next season.

markypoos77 wrote: 17 Apr 2024, 12:47 In terms of new teams next season, do we have an idea yet of who this will be? Perhaps someone with better geographical knowledge can enlighten me!? Assume Dorking will come into the NLS but others already confirmed as relegated - Oxford and Kiddy go North?
Yes I'd imagine the same, Dorking to NLS, Oxford and Kiddy to NLN

The fourth place coming down from the National League looks like it is between Boreham Wood, Woking and Ebbsfleet (Boreham wood v Ebbsfleet showdown in saturday's final game!)

Woking and Ebbsfleet would likely join the NLS.
Wouldn't it be great to have a repeat of the Torquay Woking rivalry in our NLS Champions Year :scarf:

Then we'll have Chesham coming up from the Southern Premier South and Hornchurch from the Isthmian.

Next season.

Well now that the season is over (bar Saturday's dead rubber) we can look to next season and who the new potential owners and management team might keep or release.

There were rumours that McGavin was signed on a 3 year contract, which I think then means he is under contract next season, although we received an offer in January for him, so maybe we'll cash in given the chance.

I'd imagine that Booth and Archer would have been signed on contracts to the end of next season, so I'm guessing they will still be with us.

The rest I assume will be out of contract.

I tried to make 2 lists for Keep and Release, but ended up with everyone in the Release list

Ash - works hard up front albeit in vain but ultimately not good enough, constantly fluffing decent chances in front of goal
Jarvis - Good player for this level but always injured
Halstead - competent enough but not much presence in the box, we can do better given his high wage
Lovett - not good enough
Marshall - total liability and poor decision maker
Martin - sick note
Craske - too lightweight and error-prone
Thomas - might have potential, but currently not good enough
Hall - no doubting his impact, but too old and slow now
Tomlinson - Most of our goals conceded have come from him
Moxey - Great player, but just too old now
Lapslie - His harrying and energy are an asset, but as a footballer he's very limited
Dawson - who? oh that guy on a sizeable wage, who we've seen for only a handful of games this season
Stobbs - doesn't have the bottle or the intelligence to compete in this league
Collins - obviously talented but ultimately useless on the pitch
Ofori-Acheampong - not good enough for this level and too injury-prone

Do any of those make anyone's Keep list?

Welling v Torquay Sat 6th Apr 3pm

Never left a game at half time in 20+ years until today.
That was shocking, we actually looked like we turned up to lose.
Whether that is down to the administration predicament perhaps.
Either way we're embarrassing to watch.
Glad they served alcohol as it at least numbed me for the inevitable.
Marshall, well hope that's that last we see of that idiot.
Oh dear, we're going down. There's no way we're getting points from the remaining games with this sorry bunch of losers

Maidstone v Torquay United TUE 6th Feb

United62 wrote: 06 Feb 2024, 12:11 No wonder most people cannot stand Maidstone United fans (well, I can't anyway! and I'm sure there are a few more from the area where I live).. they think it's highly amusing that a young lad lost his life back in 1971 in Torquay.
I remember thinking the same when I had to watch a large group of their fans behind the goal taunting and throwing stuff at Liam Davis while he's trying to reset his broken ankle in front of that section. Sickening behaviour.

Only one result I can see for us this evening unfortunately, and that is a humiliating defeat by only 4 or 5 if we're lucky

Torquay United v Eastborough Sat 6 January 3 pm KO

Jeez how rubbish are we. This is so painful had to turn off the live stream before half time.
We have this ever present losing mentality about us.
Even when we win and keep a clean sheet I come away from games thinking how crap we were defensively, just that the opposition we crapper at scoring
Epitomised just now by this first half.
No mentality no backbone no composure no common sense.
Lights out from here I'm afraid. See you all next season when I can gather some hope and spirit to get excited again because it isn't happening this season for sure

Online Fans Forum

One of the biggest frustrations for me with a lot of these fans forum Q&A events, is that the questions posed are always too long-winded as to allow the board member eventually just a general topic to talk about from whatever perspective they prefer, rather than answering the real question.

A good example was one of the questions started "will the club confirm if the playing budget was reduced this season".
I was eagerly anticipating an answer to a poignant question that we all are interested to learn.

Instead the question waffled on about the necessity for being competitive, everyone knows funds are tight, the damage of not being promoted, blah blah blah.
In the end Gary had a "topic" to discuss where he could mention all the positives people want to hear, rather than a direct answer to a direct question.

As such we are none the wiser about any reduction in the playing budget.

Too many of these long winded questions, make what would be a very informative forum, instead become a marketing exercise for the board members to deliver their rosy sound bytes and push their own agenda.

shaun donnellan

Firstly, no idea why Livingston are so keen on Donnellan.
Personally didn't think he was good enough this year in the NLS, let alone last year at National League level.
No brainer to release him asap in my opinion.

Secondly, I wonder whether we have let him go now rather than at the end of the season, because we have a replacement lined up and need to free up the wage bill? If so, it would be nice to see a genuine right back brought in, or at least a proper fit-for-purpose centre back to shore up the defence.

Does anyone know if this match is segregated?

I noticed most tickets are of 1 type, 'General Admission' but for our game there are specific Home and Away tickets.

Apparently it was segregated when Yeovil came here so they may be expecting a similar size away crowd
