Hargreaves signings

ferrarilover wrote:Rich is quite right. If you want to see what a terrible team with a 20 goal striker can achieve, take a trip to Plymouth. Lose Reid from that squad and they go down. The squad, the manager, the club are fodder, but they've got a striker who scores every week and a bit of luck with penalties and they're pushing for the Playoffs.

If one of our players goes on a hot streak of, say, 5 in 5, we'll be alright, that's how close we are to being an average team. That's not necessarily because we're good, but perhaps because the division is so poor.

Matt.
Your "analysis" is, in fact, some way wide of the mark. It's not just because of Reid that Plymouth Argyle are comfortably mid-table. You should have taken a look at the stats. Only 6 teams in the division have conceded fewer goals. Leaders Chesterfield have conceded just 4 fewer.
Fodder? How come "5 in 5" and you're "an average team" but 10 goals from Reid and we're "fodder"?
I've no objection to you taking a pop at my team if it's merited. What bugs me is that you try to pass off a half-baked opinion to support your ill-considered theory. Argyle have a half-decent defence, a striker who has so many flaws to his game that many wouldn't have him in the side and a weak midfield. If you think the team can make the playoffs then you have more faith than most of us. As for the Gulls, yes, a hot streak from the strikers would go a long way but the back five will have to shape up. Performances like Tuesday night mean relegation. I know. I was there.

Great credit to the management and players who were clearly up for the game.
Fantastic header from Benyon who ran his socks off, great goal from Billy and, at last a towering header from Saah at a corner.
How Barnet's first goal wasn't offside only the linesman knows and their second just upped the tension.
Looks now like Aldershot are gone plus one other. Morecambe on Saturday is another massive game and if we play like last night we can make our League status safe.
Credit to Saah for winning the ball but it was unquestionably an OG. Saah's header wasn't going in.

It was an OG. Credit to Saah for winning the ball at the far post but his header wasn't going in until a defender got his foot to it.

Re: Match off

Maybe it's time to start looking ahead to Tuesday night. What are the chances that the pitch will have recovered in time? For the benefit of those living away from Torbay, maybe the locals can tell us, how was the weather on Sunday? And today? Does anyone know of plans already in place to inspect the pitch at any stage?

Re: how to get the fans going

It does seem both remarkable and sad that a big crowd isn't expected for Saturday. I'll be making my third trip of the season to Plainmoor from Plymouth. Yes, an Argyle fan. If it's an attractive fixture for me - 35 miles away - then how come the same can't be said for the folk of Torbay?
It seems reasonable to imagine that most who have the fortunes of their local club at heart would get along to cheer the team on at such a crucial point in the season even if they haven't been for a while and regardless of the opposition. Add in to the mix the fact it's a true six-pointer and the lack of enthusiasm is baffling to me.
And how many times do you get a chance to see a genuine superstar on your doorstep? It was a treat to watch Edgar Davids at Home Park a few weeks back and I was delighted to see, when I checked the fixture list, that Barnet had yet to visit Torquay.
I enjoy my occasional trips to see the Gulls and I'll be hoping they stay up.
