New Signings for the 2023-2024 Season

Dan Martin if fit would be a good squad player if not starter when fully fit but it would need to be a monthly contract - Law on the other hand scored for Plymouth in the Fa Cup and when he got a run in the side was very solid as a full back or left wing back, you wont get much better than that in the NLS - Sign him up if hes keen !

One rumour is Ruairi Keating in discussions for a return if his contract at Cork can be cleared, another good squad option not on top money ?

Uncle Clarke part 812

Hes just left a message on the official site - Excitement is not a word i would be using at this point in time but full time is important ....

🟡 Message From Chairman Clarke Osborne

Following Saturday's 2-2 draw at Altrincham, Torquay United AFC Chairman Clarke Osborne has today issued a message to the Yellow Army.

"I am sure that the mood of deflation pervades as we all look towards what is very likely, but not mathematically certain, our relegation to the National League South. I feel for everyone connected with Torquay United both those working tirelessly for the Club and for the brilliant supporters who have supported with passion and commitment throughout this season.

"George, Mel, and the team will have much work to do in preparing for next season, and this will follow our season closing game against the National League champions on Saturday, when, whatever the result, I know that everyone will congratulate Wrexham on their success, which has certainly raised the profile of the National League and football.

"For us, next season in whatever league it is business as usual, a full time professional, well supported Club planning and striving for promotion. Together, let’s look towards next season with excitement and anticipation. I certainly am."

Gary Johnson, stick or twist?

I would also put the name of Paul Trollope forward. Back living in the Bay and an experienced player and manager - worth considering!

Keating Signs!

I have it on good authority that it is between Torquay and Yeovil to sign Keating with both offering similar terms and Keating preferring to return to Torquay. Not sure its a good signing to be honest as struggled last time in the NL after a decent spell when in the NLS but he would certainly add some energy off the bench - Not sure its the answer though i am afraid, experience and quality and lots of it is.

Can We Make the Play Offs?

Yes Yeovil are a poor side! I appreciate that their form was good going into the Christmas period but if you attended both games you would have to concede that they are very poor and very basic in their approach. Having also seen the likes of Halifax / Notts County / Chesterfield, Yeovil and Torquay are not at that level this season and mid table will be about right.

P.s The days of those touchline hugging wingers are gone with Garys 4-4-1-1 formation!

Can We Make the Play Offs?

Taking solely the last 5/6 games and the loss of Armstrong and Sparkes, a play off spot would need 4-5 signings which just isnt going to happen with the budget Gary Johnson has this season. Yeovil on Boxing Day was a good win however having subsequently seen the away game, Yeovil are a poor side and for the first 60 minutes in each we were equally so. A mistake from the opposition in each is what allowed us into those games and without them, we werent looking particularly good despite how good the results were and the highlight was certainly the fans in the away end at Yeovil who were fantastic. I can see us maybe getting one or two in this month but the end of this season is going to be a very interesting one as i dont believe any of the current squad are under contract for next season and a huge rebuild job will be needed. I cant see Little, Lemonheigh Evans, Wynter etc staying put and Wright, Hall and even Moxeys (despite his recent performances) best days are behind them - In Gary we trust but hes got one hell of a job on his hands especially with his comment about whether the Directors were listening in his post Yeovil interview which i took to mean he hasnt got much in the way of financial support to extend Armstrongs loan and/or bring in others... We shall see but another 3 points on Saturday would be good if the rain stops!

Good Luck From The Gas

I think a simple ' Please can you beat Wycombe on Saturday to save our backsides ' would have sufficed! I am sure the Torquay players and management will want to make it 3 wins on the spin and finish off the bottom but the Home form is dreadful!

Burton game off?

Predicted shower is about to arrive looking at the mass of grey cloud heading over the Bay from Paignton!! Hopefully short and not too sharp. A friend of mine at the club didnt seem too optimistic for the game if there is a sustained period of rain :(

Stay away rain!

No problem. BBC Forecast has just been updated and now shows as being pretty clear until 4 with potential showers after so I would say we have a game on our hands tonight!

Rendell and Benyon

I do agree with the signings appearing to look like a last chance gamble by Hargreaves but he does know what they are like having played with them and they have both played at a decent level. I think the one thing that should be guaranteed with these signings is hungry players as having been without a club or back in the conference this will surely be their last throw of the dice in terms of being a pro in league football. Age and ability are on their side but question marks over fitness and form in a short period of time are a worry...

Burton game off?

It is sunny on Torquay harbourside at the moment and has been dry save for a very light 5 minute shower at 9. Forecast is ok with sunshine and showers which hopefully will miss us anyway looking at the radar. With the groundstaff being able to work on the pitch all day you would think that the game will be ok. Fingers crossed!

Re: Trust

I think all fans have given Knill support from the time that he took over but serious questions now need to be asked as to his suitability for the role. The constant changing of players, formations and tactics are somewhat baffling and I think it is safe to say that he does not have a clear idea of the best formation for the players at his disposal. He cannot expect to bring in new players and expect them to have an immediate impact especially when they are young and inexperienced in league football. The squad when fully fit is very decent but players need to be given a run of 3-4 games in a set formation and playing style rather than all the chopping and changing and introduction of new players as this cannot be good for morale.

With other teams sacking managers in League Two and other managers such as John Sheridan at Argyle openly saying they are under pressure due to bad results (Not as bad as Knills!) Knill must surely adopt a back to basics approach whereby a settled experienced side is picked on form and performance in training as that just does not seem to be happening at the moment.

I dont think it is the time to give youth a chance as there is so much pressure on the side at the moment, that will come once a few wins are under the belt although that might be a month or two away. Personally, I would pick the side as follows and this is based on the last few games and players available:-

Poke, Tonge, Pearce, O'Connor (Downes when fit) Cruise

Chappell, McCourt, Lathrope, Craig, Bodin

Benyon

4-5-1 with Lathrope holding and Chappell and Bodin playing as Forwards / Wingers when attacking

For me Knill has until after the FA Cup First Round and a couple of league games to turn the tide otherwise he has to go.............................
