Ah right, missed that, thanks.rickl wrote: Hurst is gone for good. Deal done permanently a few weeks back. Think we got a little fee for him as well.
Looking a bit thin on the ground isn't it?

Fairhurst Gone
It's all gone a bit mental hasn't it? I can see the sense in letting a couple of players go to free up funds for new signings but with outgoings vs incomings currently a net decrease in playing staff and a couple more looking to go (apparently) where's it all going to end?
Is Hurst coming back from loan at Guiseley a possibility?
Considering there was a game not so long again when there weren't enough fit players to fill the bench, how is it looking for Saturday?

Torquay United v FGR (Boxing day/Jan 1ST) double header match day thread
Not saying this is a negative way but Courtney Richards is fantastic at doing just that - he harangues and harassess the referee as much as he does their midfield and it breaks up the game - very clever when the team's a goal up.Gulliball wrote: There was no point playing long balls in the second half as the wind just took them out of play. Anything the strikers couldn't control was long gone before they had a chance to run onto it.
The conditions made it quite a strange match and once we went ahead we did a very good job of turning it into a 'low quality' game before the two late goals on the counter.
Will it work against Cheltenham? maybe, maybe not but it'll be a tiht game I reckon if those tactics stick

cracking game yesterday. I went along as a neutral (well kind of - I support Grimsby but I live down here so get to Plainmoor when I can) and this was the best game I've seen this season by a mile. Courtney Richards played the game that he should be playing every match and if he can keep fit and keep everyone playing together like that then Torquay will survive.
I thought some of the tactics were odd - high ball against the wind but then not making the most of it in the 2nd half, especially - but the win was well deserved, for everyone involved. I hope Cheltenham blow it now and & Kidderminster stuff FGR too ready for the away game next weekend!
here's my neutral's match review - https://keepusshape.wordpress.com/2015/ ... ch-report/

that gate count is neat, nice one.hopefully a couple of wins and travelling support (I know, unlikely in this league!) lift it againTUST_Member_Rob wrote:What a win, can't add much else to whats been said, passion, fight and a bit of luck and it all clicked!

Also good to see the gate +2000 yesterday - average gate below is holding up!

Periscope
After hearing about a few lads being warned not to video/periscope at Grimsby's FA cup replay with Shrewsbury and that someone got ejected, I tried to find out what the deal was with it. Have a read -

I reckon it's great and doesn't really adversely affect the club or competition and as someone miles from Grimsby it's great for me but I'm interested what everyone else thinks about it.
I also broadcast myself from a few Torquay games this year

Kids for Free. The Economic Argument
portugull wrote:The gate for the Lincoln City match was from memory 1,762. Kids got in free with a paying adult.
On Saturday the gate was 1,512 a drop of 250 (14%). So my question for the Board is very simple. Does it make economic sense for Kids to get in Free at every home game if we attract a higher gate by marketing the game with this benefit. Kids win, Dad wins and the Club wins. I do mean financially as I have not seen my team win since August!
Could we please hear from the CEO if the Club has actually worked out what is best financially. I remember the Board saying that they would communicate with the fans better in future so here is an opportunity.
Even an extra 100 Mums or Dads attending adds £2,000 to the gate. Am I missing something?
.
but if that 250 extra heads through the gate was just the free kids?
Looks like the loss leader didn't really boost the next Saturday home gate so maybe it makes more sense to just charge everyone? difficult to say. hopefully the club have someone analysing who comes through the gates (do they publish the makeup of their crowds?)

Hargreaves....Hindsight
bobby93 wrote:I think he would have come good. We can all see his hands were not just tied, but were also behind his back or possibly severed altogether. Metaphorically speaking.
I think he would have come good as a manager. It wouldn't have been pretty for a season or two but then, we're hardly pretty now either are we? I can only think that the incoming board felt his often negative attitude would have been difficult to handle. Cox & Nicholson were/are probably easier to work with.
He was here at the wrong time - for us and for him - but I'm sure he'll go on and succeed somewhere else.
I think that "negative attitude" was possibly just more blunt than others could stomach. He knew he'd been sold a pup and wasn't the type to gloss over something.

will there be a next season?
you're right, it's been ages but the hardest bit is realising that you're not a league team any more. It took Town a few years to do that but have Torquay's boards got a grip of that? I don't think so. Fans too. we need to just accespt we're a non-league team and get behind them. Town's support dropped a fair bit with relegation but it's built up again. it takes timetomogull wrote:Grimsby have been in the wilderness for far too long, but I don't think they have been lower than the Conference/National Premier, have they? Like 6667Gull, I have supported this club through thick and (mostly) thin for over 50 seasons. If we are relegated to National South, I shall say "Sorry - I'm out". However, I'm still hopeful that things will turn around and that we can survive this season. But the season is slipping by and we seem to be slipping further behind. Anyone know the record for the number of home games without a win? It must be geting very close.

in terms of league position and financially too. The decison to put them on gardening leave has been a disastertomogull wrote:Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course, but if Hargreaves and Hodges had stayed, we surely couldn't have been in as bad a situation as we are now.

will there be a next season?
a few weeks back in the thread for the orquay v. Lincoln game I posted this:
"I wrote a thing for my teams fanzine a couple of weeks ago about knowing when to let go of your club in it's current form when it's being run into the ground and in financial strife. Was referring to Northampton and others but could it apply here?
in my opinion (but maybe not many others!) the club is more than the current squad, the stadium, the league position - it's about the links between club and community and its history. If the club went under would it possibly rise again stronger? Obviously that would be further down the league structure but how many current fans would get behind a re-formed club? somewhere between 500 - 1000? that would be huge support. if the team were doing well then would it matter what league they were in?
serious question. Look at teams doing it right now (Hereford) or teams that have started recently like FCUM (should this be a new thread?)"
Okay, I support Grimsby but I live down here and I get to Torquay games when I can. I've see both United v. Town fixtures this year and a few other games too.
this was a serious question. It's something I've thought about when Grimsby were really doing badly (okay, it's not perfect now but we've turned the corner). Does it really matter what league you're in?

would have been a good manager given time. He still will be but it's all about circumstance isn't it?
He'll be back in management soon, maybe at Yeovil and he'll do okay

Torquay United v Wrexham- (NOW Dec 5th)
arcadia wrote:Cox was a w----- and his name is just not worth mentioning as he knew the score when he took over and bluffed his way into the job somewhere along the line he thought things were going to change and they did not so he got out. Unless someone is willing to inject a lot of money into the club or buy it support the people running it.
I think that's a bit harsh on Cox. he's a decent manager but why should he work for nowt? No way did he help get the club in this mess,
the recent interview with Chrissie Hargreaves shows the club's been in a mess for a while. it's a mess and really sad but changing ownership hasn't fixed that. it couldn' fix that.
you're right though, it needs a cash injection but why would anyone do that? it would be throwing good money after bad. to turn it around quickly would take a lot and still not guarantee anything long term
