Torquay United v Weston-super-mare 2/3/19

On a different day with a bit of better fortune it would have been a 4-2 win. Main areas for disappointment being that as a team and including GJ we have played in these conditions and situations before and haven't learned from them. Conceding the first goal allows constant time wasting by the opposition (generally unpunished) and the overhit/underhit ball over the top in the wind leads to conceding possession repeatedly and not allowing the team to get into any rhythm. The players are much more capable than a foot race into space and should be encouraged to get the ball down and play more. On balance we deserved at least a point. Credit to WSM for their efforts, 2 well taken goals from limited chances and getting 3 points. They largely did a job on us.

New Year Reflections.

Look at the impact of those players brought in. Improved formation, more attacking intent, the settling of all players and I think significantly a level of confidence and experience that we've not seen for some time in our managers. We are in a great position with the Bristol City players as they have a level of both skill and pace unmatched within this league. I would love to see this team with possibly the odd addition to have a crack at the National League should we be promoted. What has been good to see has been the improved fitness, tactics, formations of the players that had been with us prior to GJ and the definition of standards expected/required and the players who left. I think what has been telling isn't just the players added but the players removed from the squad. Got to say he's made what may have been a challenging job appear fairly simple and I can't imagine many managers enjoying their jobs as much as GJ at this point in time. Credit to him and in turn credit to the owners

Torquay United v Gloucester City - 29th Dec

SBP wrote: 30 Dec 2018, 12:08 Firstly regardless of the performance a win was the most important thing. Getting victories when your not playing at your best is vital.

I thought yesterday that we created many chances and that was a positive. Sure we were wasteful in front of goal however the gulf in class between both teams was very evident. We missed the creative passes from Evans yesterday. JSW hasn't had much game time and that was quite evident. I don't think Jake A is as good playing in that wider role. Him and Janneh were arguing a bit.
Kalala at times is totally unplayable however he was wasteful today. I thought Reid was very good today with his link up play and holding onto the ball. I did miss a good chance which he will be very disappointed about.
I ve been very critical of Ben Wynter however I thought he has improved significantly and his last two performances at home I would have given him MOM.

So considering the players that were not available and the lightweight bench I thought we did ok.

With a full strength squad and playing with the confidence we have I think we are too strong for any team in this league. I think we are well capable of winning this league.
:goodpost:

Spot on. First half we played well, wasteful in front of goal and Janneh and Kalala seemed to believe that they are going to score from 30 yards at every opportunity. We constantly played the ball over the top which given the pace upfront was productive if a little dull and we didn't really get going in midfield (missing Evans). Second half Gloucester had more possession however didn't create many chances given that possession. It's 3 points during a busy period on a heavy pitch. You can't ask for much more than that. Excellent attendance once again.

Racism in Football

I was watching Borehamwood vs Leyton Orient on BT Sport on Saturday. A Leyton Orient player had been fouled and in the background the microphone picked up the Borehamwood player being racially abused by a Leyton Orient fan. I'd not heard this at a football match for a good 20+ years.

Torquayunited v Woking Fa Cup 1st round 10/11/18

First half we played well. Passing and movement good. A few chances created and a couple of good saves by their goalkeeper. Dubious penalty. Lemonheigh Evans played well supported by rest of midfield in first half. Probably tried to do too much in second half which slowed the movement of play down and he attracted opposition players and conceded possession. Second half we lacked a bit of extra quality however with a couple of scrappy chances and a penalty which was called back to a previous foul in which ref had allowed play to continue. Ben Gerring played well and was probably one of their best players. We put too many balls into the air and he and the fellow central defender won pretty well everything in the air. Ben Wynter is slow and a liability when he gets forward. Central defenders too slow to cover his position. All in all the right result was prob a draw or TUFC to edge it. Didn't deserve to lose. Final whistle Getting, whilst he got undeserved abuse during the game, was out of order (manner of celebration, goading of fans etc). The general troublemaker fans that cause us problems went missing when they had the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals from Woking (standard). Back to the league and hopefully the push for promotion. Lemmonheigh Evans is genuine quality, Janneh lacking that consistency as we've seen with similar younger players over the years. Great to see Olaf come on as sub.

Eastbourne Borough v Torquayunited 13/10/18

Jamie Reid didn't play badly or have a bad attitude or have a manager that didn't believe in him. He was a right footed player being played out of position with the majority of the Pop Side abusing him generally before he'd kicked a ball. He's now being played in a position that's more suited to his game. There's more opportunities and he is in a position to take them. what has GJ told him?...to ignore the fans.

Great to see him being played in position and in the goals. he's had a tough time and endured some terrible abuse whilst being played out of position. Given that his demonstrated a fair amount of resilience and is coming back strong he's far from a snowflake.

forevertufc wrote: 30 Sep 2018, 09:38 Yes, it's very easy to be over critical of Janneh's performance, he did miss a couple of sitters, but for me it's about the bigger picture, and about seeing what all of us fans sometimes miss.

For a start he is a very young player, not sure how much senior football experience he has , it can't be a lot, if any. As already stated, his pace, movement and trickery, was causing Woking's defence to have kittens at times, sure I've read a comment somewhere, apologies can't remember where or by whom, about Janneh's very presence on the field freeing up Jamie Reid, something I totally agree with.

For me the important thing is, Janneh kept, time and time again, getting himself in good attacking positions, he may well have been a tad over eager to impress, this may have caused a lack of composure in his finishing, he'll settle down and that will come, as said the important thing is, he's getting himself in the right place to finish regularly.

in fairness to Uberwozza San with no names on the back of the shirts the most practical way to identify a player is by their number.

FA Cup

MellowYellow wrote: 17 Sep 2018, 21:41 My prognosis was more on management style than win ratio's.

So the question posed is do you prefer:

Johnson's 'play to win or
Ower's 'play not to lose'
I probably prefer an alternative way....play according to the situation. Game management during the game and take a pragmatic approach. I don't think it's quite as simple as play to win or play not to lose (both can be equally as frustrating and unsuccessful). I'd rather see GJ take an approach based on the opposition and the situation at the time. If we are 2 nil up with 10 mins to go let's keep nice and compact...not fall deep but not become stretched in chasing the third.

FA Cup

MellowYellow wrote: 17 Sep 2018, 20:34 There is much optimism now among supporters for a good Cup run and promotion. A far cry from a few weeks ago.

Why? A change in management? I would suggest its down to change in managerial motivational style e.g.

Gary Johnson - promotion focused
Gary Ower's - prevention focused

Gary Johnson's promotion-focused personality see's his goals as creating a path to gain advancement and concentrate on the rewards that will accrue when they achieve them. He is eager and he 'plays to win'. You’ll recognize his promotion-focus with each game and see that Gary Johnson is comfortable taking chances; likes to work quickly; dreams big and thinks creatively. What if things go wrong! For Gary Johnson that is a price he will be willing to pay, because for his promotion-focus personality, the worst thing is a chance not taken, a reward unearned, a failure to advance.

In contrast, Gary Ower's had a prevention-focused personality and saw his goals as responsibilities, and concentrated on staying safe. He was ever vigilant and 'played to not lose'. He worried about what might go wrong if players did not work hard enough or aren’t careful enough. Ower's was risk-averse, and not the most creative of thinkers, so in an attempt to succeed he worked slowly and meticulously, to try and grind out a result . This is not to say he was not thorough nor that he could have not been successful over time - but time waits for no man, resulting in a total mismatch for the club and its supporters aspirations.

I do not try to claim one style is better than another - that is for others to judge. But I would ask how you like your manager to prep his players, for example:

We are going to shoot five penalties. Do you prefer a promotional-focus managers aspiration to score at least three times Or do you prefer a prevention-focused managers obligation to not miss more than twice.

You probably wouldn’t expect a small change in wording to affect the outcome, but it does have a big impact. Players do significantly better when the instructions are framed to match their dominant motivational focus: 'Play to Win' …! For this reason I'll take the Johnson way.
It's a decent appointment but it's only 1 game and how many teams have the new manager bounce. Let's not get carried away too soon or apply some form of leadership theory to GJ after a 2 nil win at Hungerford. 26 wins in 103 games at Cheltenham would probably have the Cheltenham fans feeling differently. All the best to GJ and if he can get it together who's to say there's not a promotion push. On a the final point that's a bit of old fashioned NLP, it doesn't provide an example of leadership style but is reinforcement of a positive action (score vs miss....the brain will focus on the action and do it...e.g. why children always drop the glass after being told don't drop the glass)

On the basis of "if you don't like what you are seeing don't turn up" there would be no one there. Are you liking what you see? Are you enjoying the atmosphere?
