Don't forget he also took us to an LDV final and into the FA Cup Quarter Final's.

Lennie Lawrence was an overpaid, glorified assistant manager. He even admitted that himself. His 'role' of Director of Football was abandoned after a few months.

And before anyone starts quoting that 'it went wrong after he left' crap...no it went wrong because the board slashed the budget in half and forced Trolls to work with a limited squad.

Re: How long will Buckle last at Bristol Rovers?

Buckle will be given time, no doubt about it.

Paul Trollope was the 7th longest serving manager in English football at the time he was placed on gardening leave. He had 5 years in the job. That shows we are willing to give managers time.

Penney on the other hand was a disastrous appointment and the chairman was brave enough to admit he got it wrong and sacked him - rightly so.

Fonda wrote: Seriously, if your board reacted 'hastily' in getting rid of him, it was a reaction to something. And from what i've seen elsewhere, that something was that many of the fans didn't rate him. I've yet to see a comment from any Rovers fan regretting that he got the boot.
Our fans are a clueless bunch at times. This is a group of fans who thought Jason Roberts was a waste of space and a rubbish striker. This is also a group of fans who thought Rickie Lambert was a rubbish signing - describing him as a "fat midfielder".

Our board reacted to the disappointment of a LDV defeat. Nothing more, nothing less. They put all their eggs in one basket so to speak and panicked when it went wrong.

One of the main reasons they gave for his dismissal was the falling attendances - well i can tell you that those falling attendances were more as a result of inept antics in the boardroom, certainly more so than Paul Trollope's management abilities. Our board cut the wage bill in half and left Trolls operating with a piss poor small squad. The board have also been a disgrace with their handling of our proposed new stadium - a stadium we should already be playing in.

If you read the internet forums then there were a lot of fans happy with his dismissal, but it is always the dissenting voices that shout loudest, the Trolls fans were drowned out.

Does anyone agree?
Sorry mate but you haven't got a clue what you are talking about.

Trolls has only had one management job and he has a L2 promotion to his name, a JPT Trophy final appearance and he also led us to the quarter final of the FA Cup.

If that makes you think he will get you relegated then you are sadly mistaken.

Fonda wrote:If Trollope is so good, why were you so keen to get rid of him...?

I have no doubt you acted within the rules when approaching him. Part of our frustration is that we are so happy to walked over in these situations.

As for the game, he was evidently working on a list of targets for during our Play-Off campaign - and his mind was on this job?

Cheers for the well wishes, but i'm not sure we're ready to accept this gracefully just yet.
I don't think the fans were so keen to get rid of him at all, there wasn't even one chant of 'Trollope Out' or any voices of discontent on the terraces.

I think the board panicked and made a hasty decision. They were banking on us beating Exeter in the JPT and when we lost on penalties they showed him the door. A very dodgy decision and the timing was all wrong. I'm not sure anyone really understood the decision fully.

I will be quite honest - we don't really have a board who understand the ins and outs of football. They are businessmen after all, not football people.

Trollope is a good man and a good manager.

Lets not forget he has a L2 promotion to his name, a JPT Trophy final appearance and he also led us to the quarter final of the FA Cup.

Not bad for his first management job.

Re: Buckle

(From the locked thread i started)

Hello Gulls,

Firstly i would like to start by saying i hope there are no hard feelings between the fans, this is football and what is done is done. Obviously there is nothing we could have done as fans, but i understand that some of you are a little bit upset - if it was the other way around i would be feeling the same.

I have always had a lot of respect for Torquay as a club and have had some friendly banter with you guys and gals in the past - a good family club. It will be the first fixture i look out for, not because of the Buckle link, but because it is undoubtedly the best away trip. (D)

I just want to clarify something here too - Our board have not made any illegal approaches, we conducted our negotiations above board and through the correct channels, i know that for a fact. Obviously the timing wasn't ideal, but that is life and there was nothing we could have done about it as we had to act in the best interests of Bristol Rovers.

If you think back to the time when Mourinho left Porto, the deal was being discussed before the champions league final and he announced he was leaving 5mins after the final whistle, that clearly didn't affect his players and they went on to lift the trophy. Any suggestion that Buckle wanted you to lose, or didn't focus on the playoff final is absurd, but that is just my opinion.

Hopefully you can appreciate the good job that Bucks has done for you and move on as a club - one person doesn't make a football club and nobody is bigger than Torquay United.

I really hope you make the right appointment and can again challenge for the playoffs...

If i was you i would welcome someone like Paul Trollope with open arms. He did a great job at BRFC and was very highly thought of by the players, you only have to look at what Will Hoskins recently said about him on the BBC website. He is a forward thinking coach/manager with some good ideas. His teams play a progressive passing game and he will improve players individually and as a collective unit. He is always looking to improve and has the Uefa Pro license in the bag, as well as studying Bayern Munich and various other top European clubs training methods. Like i said - he would be a terrific appointment.

Anyway whatever happens i hope you enjoy a good 11/12 season!

All the best... :-D

Re: You're wrong Paul Buckle

Just a quick point Glostergull - I know Buckle had Ross Hannah down at Torquay for a day or two this season but i thought i would let you know he has already joined Bradford City. I think he signed a week or two ago.
