I would have suggested when he went absent that they had a long conversation with him about what then might happen at the end of the season. To say lets see where we are at the end of the season, how you are and we'll go from there. Leave the situation open, when it was clear (2/3 weeks ago) that Knill was doing a good job to not tell Ling he is definitely returning. I wouldn't have told him anything at that stage, just left it open until the end.

I don't think there could be any arguements then about whether he was sacked or kept. But to tell him he's coming back, set a date then sack him by phone. That's unprofessional, makes us look like liars to be honest.

After all the assurances during my illness and full recovery that I would be returning as manager of Torquay..

SNW - I think you are being very naive if you think any of what you have posted is true.

This doesn't look like it's been handled at all well. If their tweets are anything to go by the players haven't been told officially, only what they are getting from the web, same as us.

and of course knill/brass saying that "they loved every minute" and "were hanging around on hols for a week" may have swung the boards thinking into looking to keep them on here
That really is quite a ridiculous statement... So because they decide to hang around having loved being around the place, they're given a job?

Cannot seriously believe all the bleating going on here. The players are hardly likely to have been told anything - the season has ended after all.
Really I just cannot see what the problem is. The board were NOT in a position to make any comment or make any decision during the relegation battle.
Suggesting that they have made a U turn after saturdays game is equally absurd.

I've just realised that I'm sat here reading a thread about Ling whilst watching a snooker match involving Ding and King. Too many ing's. Although a good %£!king would be great...

why did they tell Ling he was coming back then? If they had no intention of bringing him back why tell him anything at all..

it is the right decision but just don't like the way it's been done myself. Onwards and upwards though, Knill's a certainty isn't he? Warnock?

some people on here are so sad, just assuming that the board had said 'yes ling 100% you are manager for next year' - nonsense

There is NO WAY he could just swan back in like nothing has happened, there would always have to be talks, and if you look at the evidence the slide was on way before he went ill

Do people really want another season of crap dull football?

bye bye Ling!

As I said elsewhere, I wish Lingy all the best for the future. But this was the right time, a convenient time for a change. It shows clearlt the ambition of the board - a relegation battle is not good enough. And we don't want another one. Knill and Brass are ahead of the game, so give them the job. There is little point in starting the process again. They know the players - who is worth keeping and who isn't. And they've shown the right attitude to succeed.
