Suprised Marriott hasn't been mentioned for one of the best. Very good keeper in a diabolical team. If it wasn't for him, we would have been in the conference a season sooner.

Admittedly only watched since 2000, so maybe some legends before my time.

off the top of my head -
in no particular order -

best/favourite -

kenny veysey.
neville southall.
bobby olejnik.
gareth howells.
andy marriott.

worst -

jamie attwell.
mark coombe.
rhys wilmott.
martin rice.
and loads more. (too many to pick 1)

interesting that matthew gregg got sold to crystal palace for our record fee for a goalkeeper
and nobody puts him in the best list.

i remember his early games he looked very shaky and had a couple of nightmares, including 1 he nearly let in at wembley in 98, im sure he kind of went down to take an easy ball and managed to screw it up and it cannoned of the post.

he vastly improved though which got him a quick move to palace after playing them in the league cup.

thats weird, you wrote nobody has mentioned marriott whilst i was writing the post with my list.

agree with you a good solid keeper, very likeable also. i remember in the last few games of our league 1 adventure he put in some good performances.

i was watching marriott just before leon constantine had to take a pen twice in the last minute when we were drawing(who were we playing).we needed the points to try and stay up (blew it at colchester).

marriott was having kittens, constantine scored in both attempts, marriott went mental and then mental again at the final whistle, running towards the pop, fists pumping, yelling and screaming his head off. i remember thinking, now thats the type of guy i want at my club.

That was against Port Vale. I wasn't there but I remember hearing about Marriott going absolutely crazy.

I'd forgotten him - very very good keeper

Agreed about Marriott - absolutely excellent shot-stopper, but it must be said that he wasn't the best at claiming crosses. Overall very good at this level though.

AVH is worthy of mention.

Olejnik trumps them all.

PS Gregg was bang average. None of us could believe our luck when we got 400k for him. What ever happened to the lad?

The list of good 'keepers grows by the day! Andy Marriott and Arjen Van Heusden both did well for the Gulls and deserve to be mentioned.

Gor! This Attwell tops the bad list again. Can someone remind me when he played and why he's even worse than Coombe?

Jamie Attwell was a keeper Leroy brought in, one of his ex Bristol City contingent. If your a goal-keeper, the first thing you must be able to do is catch, and Attwell really struggled with that. He was one of those who looked every inch a footballer, apart from when you actually saw him play.....

The only game i saw him play in was away at Scunthorpe. From 1 up we lost 5-1, and at least 3 were a direct result of Attwell mistakes (one weakly parried into the path of a forward, one he palmed into the roof of the net and one where he was caught hopelessly in no-mans land and chipped).

We had another game 3 days later, giving Leroy insufficient time to get a replacement in prior to a home match with Kidderminster. We went 2 up and by all accounts Attwell did nothing wrong. Then he made one mistake and completely fell apart. Conceded two goals that were 100% his fault, two points dropped and he was released shortly afterwards.

I see. Only playing two games for United explains why I can't recall him. I must have missed that Kidderminster game. Where is he now? I wonder.
And while we're on the 'where are they now?' theme, what's Tony Bedeau up to? He's completely fallen off the radar since leaving United.

Attwell played 5 games for us (albeit some as a sub), and conceded 15 goals in that time (he played in the 4-3 defeat to York when he was a sub for Dearden, the 4-0 defeat in the League Cup (paint pot trophy) against Wycombe, and the 5-1 defeat to Scunthorpe. he then played in the 4-0 win v Bournemouth and the 2-2 draw when he replaced AVH at half time - we were leading 2-0 at the time). He has been a free agent since leaving us.

Bedeau has been a free agent since leaving Kingstonian in 2009.

Do you remember Jurgen Sommer - went on to play for USA and was it Luton or QPR?

Kenny Allen - an almost mythical figure for me - was Uniteds keeper when I started going to Plainmoor and was simultaneously inspired and hopeless. If ever the "keepers are mad" cliche rang true it was with this man

I honestly don't know how Dearden gets into anybody's best set of keepers, I lost count of how many times the opposition shot from range and scored because he was too short and overweight to move across goal. Good at reaction saves, but one of the worst keepers I've seen in terms of just giving easy goals away, all from outside the box.
