Benyon isn't in the same class as Howe and his goal record only brushes the realms of impressive when people quote the misleading goals in games started stat

What's that Hector? You don't rate Benyon? You're in danger of wearing a hole in that record.

Can I make a request? You could add it to your signature. This would save you the effort of typing it repeatedly, and save me reading your posts, expecting to see something new, but seeing the same thing written, over and over again.

I'll quickly state I am a Benyon fan. I think the problem with the stat is that it includes all his goals but excludes his substitute appearances. A proportion of his goals were scored as sub. Therefore, his ratio is often presented as being better than it is in goals to all games terms.

29 in the last season and a half before he left? I think that shows he knows where the net is.
On the subject of sub appearances, I seem to remember someone on here working out the goals scored per minutes on the pitch for him. It worked out (I think?) somewhere around a goal every 190 minutes. I would say that compares very well with Howe's record. Didnt include much in the way of penalties either.
Apathy Rules...............it's ok though, nobody's that fussed about it........

A goal is a goal regardless of whether he scored it coming off the bench or not.

The facts are, in his career, Elliot has scored 55 goals in his entire career and has played (including sub appearences) 209 games, Rene has scored 118 and played 340 games.

I'm willing to wager that Elliot scores more goals this season than Rene.

This is a good thread Fonda with several sensible postings. For what it's worth, I am optimistic for the coming season but then I'm always optimistic before a season starts! We're still in the honeymoon period with AK & CB of course but I like the type of players that have been brought in and AK's no nonsense approach to what he is looking for, and expects, from his players. I think we're in for an interesting season and, for a change, a mid table position. I think AK will give some of the younger players (Yeoman, McKenzie, Thompson, Sullivan, Hutchings) more opportunities than they had under Ling and if his past track record is anything to go by, he will bring in loan signings where he sees a need - an experienced striker for example. The downside with loan signings is AK gets a player playing well and then the parent club say "Hey - he's not a bad player" and recall him as happened last season with Josh Labadie.

What I really hope is that we're in for a time of stability at the club whereby Knill and Brass are with us for several seasons, strengthening the team year-on-year until we realise Thea Bristow's ambition of an established Div 1 club. I feel the structure of the club (Youth team, training facilities etc) is looking good. I do have one concern, and it was also a concern last season - how many competitive games will players outside the first team squad actually get? Players need matches to keep themselves fit and develop and I think there were players last season - picking a player at random, Daniel Leadbitter - who played very, very few competitive games. It must be tough on a player to step into a league match with little match practice but without a reserve side, I don't know what the answer is. Any thoughts?

We will run a reserve side although now they call it the development team. They aim to have at least one game a month plus the county cup games etc. the problem we had last year was the bad weather, plainmoor was flooded as was everywhere else so reserve matches were called off so we didn't ruin an already struggling surface.

Good grief, I just got back in the house and saw Fonda's piece, and I agree with it; it actually makes sense to me. A good post, well done! :goodpost:

And I go along with pretty much all that follows. The only thing I would add is that I hope people will not rush to judgement regarding individual players, nor about how the team as a whole is shaping up. The season is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. And I have a feeling it's going to be an interesting one. :-D

Perhaps you unfamiliar with this tact of quoting goals scored (whether as a starter or a sub) against games started. Therefore any goals scored as a sub are added to the total of goals scored as a starter yet only starting appearances are included. This is misleading as it generally ignores a whole host of appearances made as a sub and therefore makes goals per game ratio look a lot better than it is. Simple really.
