And in the four years since he left?Sunnysideup wrote: 29 in the last season and a half before he left? I think that shows he knows where the net is.
On the subject of sub appearances, I seem to remember someone on here working out the goals scored per minutes on the pitch for him. It worked out (I think?) somewhere around a goal every 190 minutes. I would say that compares very well with Howe's record. Didnt include much in the way of penalties either.
Just my opinion...
Just scroll past if you don't want to read it. I find the misplaced optimism that Benyon - who has scored SEVEN, yes, that many, goals since leaving us in 2011 - is likely to be a prolific forward for us, somewhat ridiculous. If we are relying on him for our goals then we are relegation candidates.Fonda wrote:What's that Hector? You don't rate Benyon? You're in danger of wearing a hole in that record.
Can I make a request? You could add it to your signature. This would save you the effort of typing it repeatedly, and save me reading your posts, expecting to see something new, but seeing the same thing written, over and over again.
I'll quickly state I am a Benyon fan. I think the problem with the stat is that it includes all his goals but excludes his substitute appearances. A proportion of his goals were scored as sub. Therefore, his ratio is often presented as being better than it is in goals to all games terms.
Scott Brehaut wrote:
How is it misleading?
A goal is a goal regardless of whether he scored it coming off the bench or not.
The facts are, in his career, Elliot has scored 55 goals in his entire career and has played (including sub appearences) 209 games, Rene has scored 118 and played 340 games.
I'm willin to wager that Elliot scores more goals this season than Rene.
I'm not going to go all macho and try and prove a point - I have better things to do with my money - but looking at Rene's goal return in a lone man up front formation, I certainly think he is likely to score more than Benyon. Some of Benyon's goals are in the conference. Maybe take your bet to a bookie if you want to wager it. I don't care enough.

Alright, he's scored 7 goals since leaving us, but that's because he's been on the pitch for about 15 minutes. Given that he won't take pens, Benyon needs to score 12 or more next season to eclipse a decidedly mediocre effort from a decidedly mediocre striker from last term. I think he'll do it. I don't give a toss about the endless 'one man up front' excuse. A goal is a goal and it counts the same regardless of being a lone striker, a lone gunman or the Loan Ranger.

I think we are in for a genuinely exciting season and personally, I can't wait.
If a decent 6ft plus and physical CF is brought in then I would rate this squad above last year's in all departments.
GKs: the same
Defence: Pearce more than makes up for the loss of Saah. Tonge is an improvemnet on Joe. Cruise may just step up this year.
Wingers: Massive improvement on Stevens and Macklin. I am genuinely excited to see what Chappell and Cameron can do. Thompson will get better.
CMs: Harding should add some much needed steel to the core of the team.
Forwards: Benyon WILL score goals and end the reliance on Howe. Yeoman will hopefully be involved more and a new forward of the right caliber will complete us!

Mostly agree with you SEgull but not sure that Pearce will 'more than make up for the loss of Saah'. I hope/think he will be as good as Saah but not better. This season will be an important one for Tom Cruise, Nathan Craig and Ashley Yeoman. They need to establish themselves as first team players. All three have the potential in my opinion.

Pedigree wise, Pearce has a lot more than Saah does. England youth appearances, over 150 league appearances at the age of 23, most of which have come at a higher level than we're at. Just two years ago there was talk of £500k bids for him. Fingers crossed he does well for us and we can make a bit of money (and not get ripped off..)tomogull wrote:Mostly agree with you SEgull but not sure that Pearce will 'more than make up for the loss of Saah'. Perhaps it is just the amount of clubs that decided he wasn't for them, that makes it feel like four years!

Less no doubt than the number of clubs that looked at Howe and thought "no thanks".hector wrote: Perhaps it is just the amount of clubs that decided he wasn't for them, that makes it feel like four years!

This is the problem Hector, I think you might have something else to say, so merrily start reading , then BAM! 'Benyon is rubbish blah, blah' blah'.hector wrote: Just scroll past if you don't want to read it. Don't worry about what he did elsewhere - certain players perfrom well at certain clubs. He hasn't been given a decent chance anywhere else. When he was here last time he proved himself a very capabale goal-poacher (hence Swindon paying £125k for him). How about giving him a chance before writing him off. Again.
"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."
I am not necessarily writing him off. What I am saying is that a forward line of Benyon/Yeoman is not good enough for this level. I hope he can do it but just feel if he is our main striker then we are in for a torrid season goal wise. Benyon feeding off a Howe type striker, might just work but if he is the one leading the line, then I don't see it working. He gets pushed off the all too easily, he is slow and is too small to get the better of big mean centre halves.
Benyon is slow? If you actually asked me who Knills best signing is so far then I would definately say Benyon.
We have a player whom we sold over two years ago for 125k back for nothing. He is aged 25 I think just the right age.
If he stays fit he will score more goals than Howe - the only issue is who he has alongside him. he doesn't have to play off a target man either. If Knill gets in another decent striker - big or small we are in business.

I am perhaps not as big a Benyon fan as some, but I do rate him. He showed against Rovers the kinds of goals he is capable of taking; the poacher's finish and the high quality finish beating the keep 1-on-1. I expect him to score 15 goals as par. If he gets 20 he will have had an excellent season.
