Starting the season with a bang........memories of 87-88
Seeing Newport County return with a bang yesterday made me remember the start to the 1987-88 season.
After the great escape '87 versus Crewe, the Gulls with Cyril Knowles now at the club start the season with a 6-1 win over Wrexham, and within the 1st 2 months beat Newport County away 3-1, beat Rochdale 5 -0, beat Bolton Wanderers and Wolves (both) 2-1.....followed by the 1st game of October...... a 1-0 win against excretia at Sid James's.
.....ho, and in the league cup, by the end of September, the Gulls had knocked Swansea City out of the league cup and had nearly repeated the trick against Tottenham Hotspur.
Nice one Cyril !

i remember the game v wrexham very well. it was only the second match i went to and my first ever, first match of the season. i always think of that game when this time of year comes around and we play our first match.
love that team, some right hard buggers in there who could mix it up, but also we could play a bit. we were a bit of an old style wimbledon.
i remember when goal 6 went in and the pop singing "nice one cyril", "we want 7" and my favourite "you are my torquay". (sigh) the good old days.

You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

Whilst you are correct in most of this, we actually LOST the game at Newport 3-1. I think some of us thought the bubble had burst after that but it proved to be a wonderful season.Banging_Them_In wrote:Seeing Newport County return with a bang yesterday made me remember the start to the 1987-88 season.

The home game v Newport saw us go one down after a minute but Lee Sharpe inspired us to a 6-1 victory!

So many fantastic memories of that season including some superb goals: Gardiner v Bolton, Alan Pearce v Burnley, Caldwell v Hereford, some fab McNichol free kick pile drivers. Also some classic performances including that home game v Newport (on YouTube for extended nostalgia), Wrexham, the final in the quagmire v Swansea and the epic Scunny clashes. We also tamed Bull and Mutch that year when Wolves visited. If my memory serves me right the pitch was beyond belief at times yet games still went ahead! To think we locked swords and competed with Wolves, Bolton, Cardiff, Swansea - best forget the Scarborough match though! I think there was even an appearance by a member of the crowd ( a former player who was still registered - Gary Wright?? - when someone got injured in the warm up - I believe he even kept his place for the following game??) A fantasy season!

cyril found a way of pulling a team together who only by a dog bite and an injury time goal stayed in the league, with only couple of additions they were a match for anyone, beat the top teams home and away and came so, so close to glory. plainmoor was a happy place, awash with atmosphere and pride.
yep, we definitely lost 1-3 at newport -
pumped wrexham 6-1 home first day, later rochdale 5-0, later newport 6-1.
our first defeat was a 0-1 at home to cambridge.
i remember alan pearce's showstopper v burnley at home but that was our worst home performance and we lost 1-3. it would have been goal of the season but up stepped mark gardiner later on.
beating spurs 1-0 (the dude), losing 0-3 up there (one of the best o.g's ever).
gary wright was called from the crowd to the dressing room over the tannoy and i think im right that he provided the cross to dave caldwell to score on his debut with that famous overhead kick (v hereford).
caldwells diving header in the 2nd round of the cup v bristol city at ashton gate to win 1-0.
giving the cup holders coventry the fright of their lives at highfield road (caldwell hit the bar with an overhead kick from the edge of the area and gave brian kilcline the game of his life).
mark gardiners "goal of the decade" in a 2-1 win at bolton.
the pop singing "you are my torquay" on a regular basis.
in fact the pop singing a lot.
a yellow and blue kit.
phil lloyd and john impey being the hardest pair of centre halfs EVER.
tom kellys crosses from anywhere, jimmy mac showing solidity and class.
sean hazlegrave snapping at much larger midfielders heels and showing them up.
paul dobson with his bow legged running but still being one of the best strikers to ever grace the torquay shirt.a proper finisher and poacher extroadinaire.
dave caldwell - never in the history of football has a player left such a mark and been so popular with supporters of any club in such a short space of time. he is still revered, rated and worshipped to this day and he didnt even play a full season. imagine him playing here now (gives me chills, goosebumps and makes the hair on the back of me neck prickle).
away fans being banned all season apart from the play-offs. (not neccessarily good, just a strange fact)
kenny allen, being kenny allen.
mark loram just being awesome at football.
seeing lee sharpe at 16 just gliding down the wing and taking the p1$$ out of anyone who tried to get near him. at times running down nearly the whole left wing and it was like nobody else was there unless they scythed him down.
sharpey bagged his 2 v newport just a few days after the deal was clinched for him to sign for man utd.
a last day home win v scunthorpe would have been enough for a promotion, we lost 1-2, 8 days later we beat them in the play-offs and then drew at their place.
my first ever away game was at vetch field (my mates dad sorted it because he did volunteer work for the club) in the play off final 1st leg, a tuesday night game. i had just turned 13 (i bunked off school), i went on a coach with players wags (cor blimey), apprentices and people who worked for the club.
i had to sit with swansea fans at the game and to be fair they were great. we were in a new stand they had behind the goal which seemed to go straight up vertical and walking to our seats it felt like you could just topple over and take a flier.
we lost 1-2 but played well. caldwell got loads of grief from the swansea lot, calling him an animal and all sorts.
the home leg was unreal, 3-3, dodgy penalties against us, the rain hammering down, the pitch unplayable, sharpeys last match. we really deserved it and should have won. as other others have said how the hell did that team not get promotion.
and there was much, much more that season. great days, great days. (sigh)

Brilliantly summarised - I don't think I'll ever see another season like it - and it was my first! Agree about Caldwell - he was like a comic strip hero in his short time here and the best front man we've ever had in my opinion - swashbuckling and fearless!
It was fantastic - a Torquay side which had everything really. Still don't know how we lost that play off game, the luck just didn't go with us that day. It was the most uncomprimising Torquay side that I have ever seen.
As for Caldwell - what a player. I remember him scoring the winner in an FA Cup Tie at Bristol City with two minutes to go.
He scored with a diving header - the ball must have been about two inches off the ground at the time. Best Torquay goal I have ever seen.

Given what had gone before, that season was a line in the sand and everything is now either pre or post Cyril for me!

yep, my first season too, my first game had been the last day great escape, 2-2 v crewe.
i hadnt been massively into football and until then the team i liked up to that point was man utd (yeah i know) and they were doing pretty crap in those days, so i wasnt a glory hunter.
i was just getting more and more interested and the gulls were in peril, dad was determined that i was going to go because it might have been the last chance to see a league match. my lad is just like i was and i did the same at the end of last season making him go vs barnet. he loved it and is finally getting into football.
mum was always a bit funny about me going to football then because there had been trouble in recent times especially when we had a saturday night visit from wolves.
after that game i was just tufc mental. that first game feeling v wrexham was on a level with christmas morning, the atmosphere, the sights, the game, the pop singing, the baking hot day, paul shane from hi de hi being sat up in the grandstand just behind where we were stood, the smell of hot dogs, cigars and liniment is still fresh in my mind.
i just remember it being incredible that season to go from where we were to where we got to, and a lot of people were telling me all the time how things had been in the years previous (years of mediocrity, crap and the webb era) so i understood, i got it how lucky i was to be a supporter in those times, in fact there were many really pessimistic, because of the way things had been, they were just waiting for the bubble to burst and for it to all go wrong.
even in that first game when we went 0-1 down everyone around us was like "here we bloody go again".an hour or so later they were all singing "we want 7". awesome.
great days. (sigh)
you always remember things were better than what they actually were from when you were a kid but in this case im sure im not because there are many others who remember and describe that season in the same way that i do. im not wrong am i, it was that good wasn't it?

Gawd - lots of great memories from that Cyril Knowles season. Couple of my memories - in that second leg game against Swansea, Dave Caldwell taking out a Swansea player (was it Richard Money?) in about the second minute with what shall we say was a 'rugged challenge'. I think he barged him into the goal post. A dead cert sending off ..... but because it was so early in the game, our Davy got away with it. Not so the Swansea player - he was stretchered off !!!
The other memory was a Tuesday night fixture. It had been raining a bit during the day but not much so I was surprised when walking up Bronshill Road to meet fans coming away from the ground and telling me the game was off. The rumour was that Cyril ordered out the hosepipes so that the game would be called off because we had several players out injured. The match may well have been against one of the other promotion contenders - anyone else recall that night ?? Just realised ....... TWENTY SIX SEASONS AGO !!! Must go for a lie down !!!

i remember an evening game vs stockport that was called off for a water logged pitch about 15 mins before kick off and a lot of the crowd were already in. we were given vouchers to redeem at the rearranged game. people were fuming.
i think that was in 87-88, could that have been the one?
i know what you mean about 26 years, bits of it seem like yesterday, scary. lifes definitely too short as they say.
