It does if you have money. Cheltenham only kept 2 this summer and signed near on 20. We only kept 4 in 2007 and built a brilliant squad from stratch.
If we're relying on trialists to fill too many squad places then that won't help us, but otherwise the more scope Nicholson has to work, the better. If he thinks he can't improve on someone for the same money, then at least we know the first 14 we have now (including those on loan) are a decent mid table side at this level.

If the new owners do take charge and splash the cash then great. In 2007 we had loads of money for Buckle to flash around, not so much now.Gulliball wrote:It does if you have money. Agree with others, it really depends on finances. There is an obvious takeover maybe days away from completion and again it depends on what their intentions are for the club, if the new owners want this club back in the football league and are prepared to put money in to the transfer budget, then this list below are the only one's I'd keep at the club.
If money continues to be tight, and the re-building process slow, then of course there are some names on the full list in the O/P that should be kept.
Dan Butler
Josh Rees - On Loan ( try to sign if player being released by parent club)
Angus Macdonald
Iffy Allen
Luke Young
Danny Racchi
Shaun Harrad
Nathan Blissett
Nathan Smith - On Loan (try to bring back if possible)
Sam Chaney
Brendan Moore - On Loan ( try to sign if player being released by parent club)
Andre Wright - On Loan (try to bring if possible)
Durrell Berry
One thing that does need sorting out is the goalkeeping position, this as we know is a specialised position that no team should take the piss out of, and we have this season. That's no slight on Lavercombe, who's done very well, and improved greatly during the course of the season, but his inexperience was costing us goals, to many goals.
As said by Royal, we haven't seen anything of Amos Kabeya , so really can't give an opinion.
As I've said time and time again, I'm a huge fan of Courtney Richards , his work rate is faultless, he's that type of player who never gives up, and does have a good attitude out on pitch, but just doesn't have enough quality, if you wan to chase promotion, no point, however again depends on finances.
Ajala since he's been back, disappointing, not done enough full stop, doesn't look the same player, I'd question whether he really wants to stay here and earn himself a new contract, he is good enough.
Nicho, again depends on money, nothing to lose really in re-registering himself as a player, but his playing days are well and truly over and he knows it, I'd rather see us sign a couple of utility defenders who can play centre/full back.
Rest not worth talking about, maybe a bit harsh on Gerring, who try's, and plays his heart out, but isn't good enough all round for this level.

I more or less agree with your list but I hope you don't think Aman Verma is 'not worth talking about' !! I'm sure you've just overlooked him. I agree with you about Courtney Richards. He does work hard and I thought he had a much better game last night, but his control and passing is poor.forevertufc wrote:Agree with others, it really depends on finances. Thanks for pointing that out re; Verma Tommo.
Can just I apologise to Arman Verma right now, that was a slip. Yes I would absolutely keep him at the club, for me he fits into the utility player mould, he has done very well since his move to right back, so is defiantly a player who's capable of filling across the middle and right back.

4 of our loanees have contracts that run out in June this year - Moore, Verma, Rees, and Wright
Nathan Smith's contract runs out in 2017 and unfortunately I see him playing at a higher level than the Conference next year
I doubt we will see Lavercombe back next year.
Moore and Rees have been outstanding and I would love to see them back. Verma would be a very good player to have back as he can do a decent job in both midfield and seemingly full back too.
I would be very happy with a team like this next season:
Moore
Berry (Hopefully back around September if not sooner, seeing the progress he is making)
MacDonald
__________ (preferably Smith but unlikely)
Butler
Allen
Young
Chaney/Rees
__________
Blissett/Wright/_________
Blissett/Wright/_________
I feel that a few class signings where I have left the blanks and we could really have a playoff push on. Blissett and Wright are good but I feel that we would need a prolific regular-scoring striker to consistently get results. Not saying they haven't done a good job but I feel some extra fire-power would be required for a serious push.
However at the end of the day it's down to the the new owners to decide how much of their own cash they want to splash. If the board don't want to spend their own money, and they predict a 1800 avg gate then our budget will be exactly the same! Hopefully though we can average around 2000 and we will have a budget big enough to get some decent signings and really show that we are contenders to return to the Football League.

I agree with most of the list but would definitely release both Ajala and Richards.
Ajala has been poor and I'd personally like to see us bring in an experienced central defender in view of the fact Nathan Smith will not be back. I also think Allen is the flair player for our team. We cannot afford to carry two flair players in a team.
Richards is a tireless worker but his distribution is shocking and he is no more than a hustle merchant in the middle.

A certain Lee Mansell was nothing but a hustle merchant too.
I actually think Richards has a place in the team doing exactly what he is good at. Breaking up play.

Some people seem to confuse National League with Champions League! Richards is a good player to have at this level.SteveDeckchair wrote:A certain Lee Mansell was nothing but a hustle merchant too.

I keep saying it, TUFC fans have been so used to seeing dross, rubbish football and poor limited footballers for so long now they seem to grasp at any straw, the slightest bit of half decent football or a bang average, mediocre, run of the mill, limited, poor quality footballer gets met with praise, hype, shouts of " good/great player" "quality" "legend". There are other teams in our division with similar resources who have much better players than Courtney Richards. The absolute minimum requirement for a professional footballer at any level no matter what they are paid should be an ability to pass a ball, which he cannot. All the effort, running about, endevour and enthusiasm cannot mask that and is no excuse for poor basics.PhilGull wrote: Some people seem to confuse National League with Champions League! Mansell was rubbish most of the time also and on far too much money in comparison to his actual "talents".
You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

Agree more or less with Chunkygull.
Had a conversation with a friend during the match a while back about Richards, and he said "it's national league what do you expect" and my reply was I've heard this said so many times and this view point is utter nonsense.
As I pointed out to him, how many times over the past 3 seasons have we seen a part-time club play us down here, and the majority of their players have a reasonable standard of fitness and physical ability, and an above average ability to control and pass a football, the answer is more than a few.
Yes we do play in the national league, so I'm not, no one is expecting players with a consistent 90% control, and passing ability , or the physical ability that you associate with higher leagues. But they should have the ability to control, pass and put the ball in the right areas at least 5 times out of 10.
Again it really does depend on our budget for next season, if it's tight, Richards is a good stock player at this level, if the club has a bit more freedom in the budget and it wants to mount a serious promotion challenge, and if we are talking serious then Richards is a no, no.
Teams that chase promotion have the basic ability to hold possession, having a player in your that can run around and break up play does help, but then that player needs to pass, Richards 75 % of the time can't pass a ball 5 yards into the right place.
His work rate and attitude are second to none, his technical ability, would be bang average in the league below, let alone are level. If you've ambition don't settle for 4th best, you do that when you have got no money.
Just to add, I'm not confusing the national league with the champions league, nor do I play football manager games on the computer, I have never owned a copy of championship manager in my life.

And yet Lee Mansell is a regular in the Bristol Rvrs side that's challenging for automatic promotion to Div 1 and was also a regular in their promotion side from the Conference last season so the other 10 players in the team must be sh*t hot .....chunkygull wrote: Mansell was rubbish most of the time also and on far too much money in comparison to his actual "talents".
Agree on Mansell, he had the ability to keep possession, and a decent short pass on him.
