Paul Buckle, currently residing in sunny California, has just signed Carlton Cole. They're going to be in the third tier of US football.

It seems Josh Rees is being linked, or having a trial, with Braintree. Bloomin' shame - I would have liked to have seen him back at Plainmoor this season ....... playing for us ! I see he was an unused sub in Braintree's defeat at Maidstone on Tuesday night. Other 'unused subs' on Tuesday were Shaun Harrad (Wrexham) and Tyrone Marsh (Dover).

Spare a thought for Joe Quigley - out for the season with cruciate ligament damage I think. Bad news and frustrating for any player, but especially for a young player trying to make his way in the game. Good luck, Joe.

Oops !! Meanwhile down in National Leagues North and South, both Fabian Speiss (Alfreton) and Martin Rice (Gosport) conceded five yesterday. Re above post, Josh Rees has signed for Chelmsford apparently.

Truro City boss Lee Hodges believes his side's poor home form might be due to away teams spending the weekend in Cornwall. That's strange. I should have thought, since his team spends all the week in Cornwall, that they would be almost invincible at home. And the away teams, having a jolly weekend holiday in Cornwall, would have their minds on things other than football..

I guess it's more about a group of part-time lads who only get together for training a few evenings a week when they aren't doing their 'real' jobs spending a weekend together bonding and improving their camaraderie.

Well done, Angus. Nathan Smith is also making a name for himself at Port Vale - good on you, Nathan. Not surprisingly, Dan Butler has embedded himself in the Newport side who also have Josh Labadie and the 'lump', Jon Parkin. Another Josh - Josh Wakefield - seems to be establishing himself in the Aldershot side. Good to see Aaron Downes was on the bench for Cheltenham yesterday after being out injured for much of last season and - guess what ? The Cheltenham match was referee'd by the villain, Brett Huxtable, so he's made it on to the league list, then. To be fair to him, the last time he ref'd at Plainmoor, he had a very good game.

Noticed that Craig Stanley is now playing for Southport. He deserves better than that. Three ex-Gulls players on the Aldershot bench today - Scott Rendell, Josh Wakefield and Iffy Allen. Rendell and Wakefield got on - Iffy didn't. Iffy doesn't seem to be doing too well at Aldershot so far.

Mustafa Caryol has moved from Middlesbrough to Notts Forest (he's getting closer to London) and Chris Robertson has moved from Ross County to AFC Wimbledon subject to, according to the BBC, 'international clearance'. Surely that's cr*p - international clearance isn't required for Scottish players, is it ?

It's required for all players moving from one Football Association jurisdicton to another.

Thanks Philgull. I didn't realise it included players moving from Scottish to English clubs.

More updates on ex-Gulls players finding their true level in National South or North. Dale Tonge is now with FC United of Manchester, Elliott Benyon has moved from (relegated) Hayes & Yeading to Wealdstone and has notched up a few goals already and I noticed that Josh Carmichael is now playing for Gosport. I thought he would have been playing at a higher level. There were five ex-United players in Gosport's side last Saturday - Carmichael, Martyn Rice, Ben Harding, Aaron Dawson and Joe Oastler. Fabian Speiss having a torrid time at Alfreton - he's already let in 29 goals.

I think once you drop out of the League it's less about playing at a level suiting your ability and more about the finances, employment opportunites if part-time and quality of life outside of football.
