Puddy, Lucas, Gosling and Montano all proven at this level
Chester have released Elliot Durrell and Johnny Hunt among others - both good players at this level but with clear North-Western connections

I'd consider McLeod and Barry from Wrexham, plus Gosling from Bristol Rovers. I think we would have a decent chance of getting Gosling.
Many years ago, I signed Elliott Durrell for Torquay in Football Manager. Not sure what is like.

As usual people look at retained/released lists and play 'Football Manager' and it's all bollocks really.....
Why should a club of limited budget only be looking at players released at it's own level as if they're the only ones available? Why not learn from the other clubs of similar budgetry limitation and recruit upwardly mobile players from the levels below?
During the only lengthy conversation I have had with Kevin Nicholson he was of the opinion that Ryman League Premier was rather low to be looking at possible recruits. My opinion differs greatly and I rather got the impression he had no relative first hand knowledge on which to base that opinion and would say quite categorically that there are ambitious young players in that league screaming out to be given the opportunity of full-time professional football and to whom some of his defenders in particular cannot hold a candle to..
I would give you two Dulwich Hamlet youngsters ~ Nathan Green (a left wing-back of far greater technique and tactical awareness than anyone he has in his squad) and Michael Chambers (who if anyone thinks Sean McGinty is good; knocks him into a cocked hat for reading of defensive situations and who's distribution is nigh on one hundred per cent reliable and effective in setting up quick counter attacks) Chambers has already moved from Hamlet once as a teenager for a hundred grand; went to Crystal Palace where his career was wrecked through injury and made a comeback last year with Welling where he then went and broke his leg. he's lost none of his pace and class (as they say) is permanent. Read what I wrote about him last season here:

Michael Chambers this afternoon
There's a young left back playing with distinction at Bognor Regis this season called Dylan Barnett. He's an Irish u18/19 international on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion who will almost certainly be looking to up his level of football next season. Again; far better than anyone in the United squad.......you see how well Jordan Lee eventually turned out to be and last year Nathan Smith proved ot be over a whole season. Barnett is unlikely to make Albion's Premier League 25 for next term so there's another one.
There are young strikers to choose from in this level and the one immediately below and no finer hold-up payer who has already been at Torquay United once who could do a job ~ Gavin Tomlin. Again at Hamlet and far too good for that level and far, far more effective than Shaun Harrad.
Ollie Pearce at Bognor; far; far stronger, more direct and accurate of shot than Ruairaih Keating for one; and Sami El-Abd at the back for them who's an utter beast and far better than Myles Anderson......a goalie there too called Dan Lincoln who came out of Reading Academy ~ he'll command a box for you and just doesn't drop balls like Brendan Moore does.
That's just two clubs with half a squad worth of talent better than Nicholson has at his disposal and then there's the very strong Havant & Waterlooville team that has just gone up to National South and these are the squad's from which players will dissipate and go onto better things for themselves that a club like ours should be well aware of.

Totally agree with Merse 100%. Take Izale McLeod for example. Done p*ss all for a good few years now and released by Wrexham. Just because he's ex football league then he is considered a decent signing.
He's not. He's been released by Wrexham in another step down the footballing food chain.
I'm not saying there aren't exceptions to the rule but the club should be looking at proven players at lower levels with potential to step up and more importantly, the desire to step up.
More importantly than that.....the right attitude.

Probably couldn't agree more Merse. You always get a sense of desire and showmanship from players wanting to better their career and having a platform of a club with a massive reputation like Torquay is very desirable for them. Think of recent players like Eunan O'Kane and Angus MacDonald playing for teams that this season could of well been in the play offs in the Championship and playing first tier football.
I made the thread mainly for informative purposes and not as a 'Oh look this player has been released, LETS GET HIM' sort of scenario.

I agree with Merse regarding Michael Chambers. He was with Welling United last season and he stood out at the away fixture under Paul Cox. I liked the look of him.
I'd much rather 6 or 7 younger players from the lower divisions who would jump at the chance of moving up to or back into professional football. If they've got enough about them.
Aaron Greene is an attacking left wing back at Bishop Stortford. They've just been relegated from the conference south. He just returned from a knee injury before joining them and went on. To be there POTY. He come through the youth system at Brentford, where I saw a bit of him.
Kadell Daniel at Leatherhead. There's a reason that he is with them after spending time at Woking & Welling last season, but thought he had enough about him to have a decent career.
Montell Moore, Came through at Brentford. Very technical footballer, didn't make the jump from development squad to first team, was sent on loan to FC Midtylland (Brentford's affiliated club) after some issue with the law and his progress halted. Joined Charlton's under 21 for 6 months, before being released. Now playing in Malta with Hibernians. He broke on the scene at Brentford at 17 and looked brilliant, problem was he started to believe it. Theres not a lot of footage and YouTube videos could make me look like a player, but this shows his technique

My friend and erstwhile colleague Sean Daley coached Montell Moore as a youngster at Brentford and he is indicative of the sort of talent that emerges from the 'London cage' culture where young lads with unbelievable foot dexterity and flare can be developed into extremely talented footballers.
I used to provide Sean with a stream of these players from the estates of Islington, Camden, Haringey and Hackney when he went on to become head of pre-academy at Tottenham Hotspur ~ none of them ever got a deal at Spurs but many of them did elsewhere utilising the lessons they had learned at Spurs. I spent the first part of last season working with a group within a north London community project; several of whom had 'been there, done it but no longer wore the tee shirt' as they had departed from the professional academy scene for one reason or another; some like Montell who got caught driving a mate's car; had no license or insurance and got accused of 'handling stolen goods' that he maintains were nothing to do with him and those charges were thrown out of court.
It is this rough edge of the social spectrum from which so much talent goes to waste and isn't either given a chance or persisted with by professional clubs who prefer to opt for the middle class, less streetwise and less hungry natured who are the subject of so much frustration shown by the management of clubs when they fail to rise to the opportunity and grab first team football.

Yet again we may struggle to get a number of these players to relocate to Torquay / Devon, away from family / friends and larger towns and cities. Relocation of training out of area should be fully explored, has it been!
