Good season for Devon clubs

Post by Gullscorer »

Congrats to Tiverton Town, who beat Salisbury 2-0 today to win promotion to the Southern League Premier Division.

With Argyle winning promotion to League One and Exeter City in the League Two play-offs, not to mention another great escape by the Gulls which even impressed Clarke Osborne and which could be called a success given all the circumstances of the past two or three seasons, Devon football is not doing too badly at the present time. And for the Gulls, could have been much worse.

Now for next season..

Agree about Tiverton, Exeter and Plymouth, but by no stretch if the imagination can we claim any success. If we do it shows how low our expectations have fallen.

Yes, this has got to be one of the few countries, anywhere in the world that has a habit of describing certain failures, as glorious. Our season was a relief, by no means a success, Exeter have an massive achievement in gaining a play-off spot against all odds, but unless they gain promotion, then their season isn't a success either.

It's all about context, chaps.

If we'd been relegated, just how long before we were forced to go part time and the resulting apathy set in amongst the fanbase? I'll celebrate the "failure" of making things more uncomfortable for GI in the hope that the fans don't make the mistake of sitting back and trusting GI. Just remember how close we were to putting a genuine smile on the face of Osborne, his failure to invest a very moderate sum should have seen us relegated. Thanks to the efforts of the players and management for digging their heels in and refusing to go down without a fight we still have a slim chance of keeping the club alive to fight the battles that lay ahead.

Well Against all odds Newport who were very much like we have been so often were dead and buried weeks ago. Yet they have pulled off the unthinkable and in the last 2 minutes have scored and ensured the survival in league two. Plymouth blow their chance of the title and Portsmouth take it when Doncaster looked to have secured it weeks ago. Hartlepools will join us after our own great escape. so Its only who will be promoted to our division and who will be promoted to the league in place of Hartlepools. This was quite a day. Well it was for fans of the respective teams, Good luck to Portsmouth who deserved it. well done PLYMOUTH for promotion to League 1 and Exeter for getting into the playoffs.
