United’s ladies injury hit side fought hard but succumbed to a 4-2 loss on Sunday Following on from a tough week for the football club, the women’s Chairman Steve Elswood announced on Saturday that he and the ladies have sponsored up and coming star Arkell Jude-Boyd until the end of the season. The Yellows travelled along the rain soddened coastline to Chichester City’s 4G surface to face Moneyfields FC in their third game in seven days. The Gulls opened and closed the scoring through Ocean Latto and Lexi Watts but goals from Skye Louise Grainger, Gemma Simmonds, Bekah Tonks, and the impressive Charley Wilson-Wilton were enough to give the hosts the three points in atrocious weather. United with only eleven players for this match in their matchday squad having had numbers tested in what was their third game this week, could be very proud of their efforts and improving displays against a top four established National League outfit. Early Moneyfields pressure forced a series of corners in the opening five minutes, which came to nothing as the impressive United defence stayed strong to the crossing attacks. It was United who took the lead however with a well worked goal from left back Ocean Latto on eight minutes, with Player Manager Tracey Cross holding up the ball before playing in the overlapping Latto, who slid the ball into the bottom corner to reward United after a very disciplined start. Having been pegged back after leading 2-0 by Moneyfields in the corresponding home fixture, United knew the hosts would come back at them strongly, and pinball in the area from a Moneyfields cross saw United keeper Emma Ayres tip around the post from a close range shot, giving Moneyfields another corner. From the resulting corner the ball was headed in by Skye Louise Granger for the equaliser making, it 1-1 after 25 minutes. United’s impressive keeper Emma Ayres tipped a curling effort around the post as the hosts intensified their pressure, and they did make it 2-1 through Gemma Simmonds, who finished from a close range cross before a third goal was scored by Becca Tonks, who drove the ball over the head of Ayres from just outside the box, and the hosts led 3-1 at the break. The second half saw an increase in the rainfall and was a very even 45 minutes, with United banking up and proving very hard to break down, a real feature of their improvement in recent weeks under the new management of Tracey Cross and Jake Ellis. In the 65th minute the hosts increased their lead when Charley Wilson-Wilton capitalised from a corner that spilled from keeper Ayres grasp to force the ball into the net and make it 4-1. However United refused to let their heads drop and with the home side making changes began to control the last 15 minutes, and deservedly got a second to make it 4-2 as Lexi Watts smashes home a rebound off the keeper after a cross into the box. It was great fighting spirit from the eleven that put on the shirt against a strong opponent, however their are bigger games to come in March as the Yellows look to seal their safety and National League Tier 4 football for the 2024/25 season in what would be classed as a successful first ever season in the National League. With a rest weekend this Sunday, United again hit the road on the 10th March with a trip to bottom of the table Selsey FC, as they try and stretch the gap between themselves and the relegation zone. The post TUWFC Slip To Defeat At Moneyfields first appeared on Torquay United.
