Tiverton 0 United 3 (Hayfield 14′, Crosbie 37′, Ash 49′) United came out on top in their final pre-season outing on Saturday, as they ran out 3-0 winners at Ladysmead. The hosts certainly gave as good as they got in the early stages, until a moment of class saw The Gulls break the deadlock on 14 minutes. After being awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal, Dan Hayfield took centre-stage by striking a superb right-footer into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0 to United. That goal certainly settled Paul Wotton’s side, who then proceeded to boss the remainder of the first period. Although Torquay enjoyed the bulk of the possession stakes, shots on target remained at a premium, until United struck again eight minutes before the interval. Ed Palmer, who enjoyed a spell at Tivvy after originally departing Plainmoor thirteen years ago, did remarkably well to hook in a cross from the byline. The lofted ball served as the perfect invitation for Jadyn Crosbie to rise highest at the back post to head home. Two goals to the good at the break. It wasn’t long after the restart that Wotton’s side made it three. With a packed goalmouth in front of him, Brad Ash took a brief look up from the edge of the box before curling a sublime effort into the net, just inside the far-post. It was a strike that deservedly drew applause from both sets of fans throughout the Ian Moorcroft stadium. With starting places ahead of day one up for grabs, there was no let-up thereafter from the visitors, as they continued to put the Town backline under pressure with a stream of dangerous attacks. Substitute Ben Seymour nearly added to Torquay’s tally with a quarter of an hour remaining, with Tiverton’s glovesman producing a fine smothering parry to prevent further damage for his side. Omar Mussa also went close with a 25-yard free-kick that just didn’t dip in time on 85 minutes, but in the end, United had to be content with juts the three-goal winning margin. With the warm-up action over, all attention now turns to next weekend when the real stuff begins at home to Enfield. See you there! UNITED: 13. Matt Wonnacott, 3. Jay Foulston, 5. Sam Dreyer (23.
