As a compatriot of Bobby's, how would you say his surname should be pronounced?

Really. is this the best we can think of. surely we can come up with better jokes than that and as for a song. we had better have something more fitting or our new goalie may be a little more than less impressed.
of course we could have signed arnie in attack. at least then they wouldn't have much answer to his 9mm uzzi

I would've said much like it was spelt. O-lej-nik.

Great signing though, feeling fairly confident about defence. Just to get some wingers and a forward or two now!

I wasn't asking you! :na:

My initial thought was that the "J" would be silent. Something more like O-ley-nik.

I'll wait for the Austrian to make a judgement! ;-)

Seems like I'm wrong according to this site:-

To be fair, he might be a native Austrian, but that name sounds pretty Polish to me.

If it's not to be "Boaby", we'll call him "Ollie" ?

"Robert" seems to be too formal.

2,000 posts Trojan!

Ollie seems decent to me, Boaby sounds rubbish and far too original for us, all the nicknames we give to players end up being ruined second halves of surnames!

Yes you are quite right. it's a Polish surname & is pronounced O-Lay-Nik. For hundreds of years Poland & the Austria/ Hungary
Alliance (Empire) have had immigration arrangements with Poland, & many families have relatives in all 3 countries. Of course it is quite possible that his family have been in Austria for generations & an Austrian pronounciation of his name is now used.

There's a bloke called Olejnik in our office, and i'm pretty sure he pronounces it O-Lay-Nik.

He would know! I'll be having a word with my friend. Now that I think about it he has a J in his (very long) surname that isn't pronounced... He's had a mare I reckon.

Perhaps it depends on local diallect? Maybe the same name would be pronounced differently in Poland/Austria?

Hi Jerry. Truth is is isn't an Austrian / German name so i am not 100% but i believe it is Czech in origin and pronounced OL-YA-NIK.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
