They were poor but I think for most of the game we looked pretty good. The opening half was a bit scrappy, not a lot going on in the way of creative, attacking football. Once we got the goal right after half time we got the wind in our sails (particularly the likes of Eunan and Danny) and every time we went forward could have resulted in a goal. We wobbled again just a little when they got the goal back but defensively, aside from giving the goal away, I think we looked quite strong today. Plenty of long balls which Robbo and Ellis dealt with all day long, Nico and Oastler both getting forward, bodies all over the pitch getting stuck in (another great display from Lathrope). Three really well taken goals as well. Great to watch.
Overall a solid display. You can only beat what's put in front of you. Doesn't matter if Plymouth are a poor side, you've still got to put the ball in the net.

They're in trouble. We were not near our free-flowing best for the most part of the game, yet we still ran out comfortable. I think the first half they restricted us to good effect. I recall 1 chance in the first half, that was from their lad who forced Bobby into a good save.
Still, second half and a well-taken goal from Eunan to set us on our way - well struck volley from a cleared corner. However, he scored one of the, if not the best goal I've ever seen about 5 minutes after. Talking 40 yards here. Unbelievable effort, truly outrageous.
The third could have come sooner, O'Kane was a whisker away from his hat-trick, Howe had a chance or two, Nicholson too, before Danny ran from the halfway line and sidefooted home. They grabbed a late consolation and they had a bit of pressure but not to much really.
Cracking atmosphere, couldn't here the lads in the corner at all unfortunately, but the halfway line made a fair bit of noise at times.

First half did not think the team got it's passing game going to much up in the air, bit edgy a tad diss-jointed, however what was said at half time i dont know...what a difference first to the ball, passing quicker, crisper blow Argyle away, they could have complained if we had won by 5 .

So after 39 years we have finally beaten Plymouth Argyle, and what a result it was. Plainmoor was rocking and the atmosphere was fantastic. The final score was 3-1 and let’s get into the match report then.
The Argyle fans were packed in the away end with good numbers; however there was some in the home end, with only a couple rightly ejected from the ground. The mighty Yellow Army singers were also packed at the end of the pop near the away fans singing all game with passion, the Torquay fans made a fantastic noise and that urged on the players from start to finish.
At the start of the game there wasn’t much action, we made a few mistakes in the middle of the park and also at the back. Mansell and Lathrope made a few sloppy errors, however they did eventually warm up and get into the game. We always looked for our danger men who were Howe and Bodin. Although it was Danny Stevens who had the first run of the game, he twisted and turned but nothing came from it. At this point the defence were coping well against the Argyle forwards. But we kept losing possession in the middle of the park.
Nicholson, who scored a cracking goal last week, played a great ball to Bodin with skill; Howe was also involved and eventually won a corner. The corner came in, it was a scramble for the ball near the goalmouth, but a foul was given to the Pilgrims. Later on, Bodin had another nice part of possession, he ran with the ball into the box but unfortunately nothing came from it as he was tackled. After this, Danny Stevens ran with the ball with pace but he was tackled and the ball went out for a goal kick. The referee was having a poor game; he was giving everything to Plymouth. Eunan and Stevens again linked up well, O’Kane then gave the ball to Nicholson, but the left back crossed in a ball too deeply. On 27 minutes Brian Saah came off for Chris Robertson because Saah was injured.
Then Argyle had their first chance of the game. They were on a break after a Torquay corner, a ball was played out well, however our defence did well and cleared the danger. A few minutes later Plymouth were on the attack again, a cross came in but it was saved. At this stage Howe had a spell of laziness and sloppy play, the midfield sharing that poor play. The referee was still having a poor game, having said that he did give a free kick to us with Nicholson taking it. It was nothing like his free kick at Chesterfield, as he kicked it straight into the wall.
We had most of the possession in the first half, but we couldn’t really make any proper chances to score. Ellis was defending well and he gave it to Robertson. The early sub then passed the ball to Bodin and he made a dangerous run. The ball then fell to Howe, but he couldn’t do anything when he had the ball. When the half time whistle blew, the Torquay fans were a little disappointed that we hadn’t taken the lead. Plymouth didn’t play well, neither did we but we had the most of the possession. The Yellow Army sung their hearts out when the players and staff returned to the temporary dressing rooms, wanting a better performance in the second 45 minutes.
When the players came out for the second half the Yellow Army were still in the same position, and sung extra hard to urge the whole team to get this victory that we have been waiting 39 years for. All this support worked straight away because Eunan O’Kane scored the first goal of the game. Eunan was standing at the edge of the box. A ball came in to the middle of the box, it was cleared but only to O’Kane who shot with power and skill right in the bottom corner, 1-0. Just two minutes later O’Kane scored again! O’Kane retrieved the ball and he chipped the Argyle keeper, class football by Eunan O’Kane. 2-0 and the Yellow Army went crazy! After those two goals we were on top having the best part of possession. Danny, Rene and Eunan leading the charge, making chances, Robertson and Ellis doing their part at the back. Mansell linked up with Eunan skilfully, O’Kane then took a shot but his shoot went well wide. A player that hasn’t had a mention yet was Lathrope. I thought Damon did well in the 2nd half, and played some nice passes to the men in front of him
On 68 minutes, it was game over as Danny Stevens scored our 3rd. He ran with pace, which scared the Plymouth defence, no Argyle defender even tried to tackle Danny and he shot home, 3-0! After this Torquay had a nice bit of possession and when Argyle did get the ball back they caused no danger. Bodin off for Morris.
After our second substitution of the game, our defence made their first mistake of the game allowing the Argyle players run into the box. A ball was played into the middle of the box and Argyle got their only goal of the game, 3-1. After this Argyle seemed to get into this game, causing trouble for our defence and they had a couple of chances to score. When the fourth official signalled that there was 4 minutes of injury time, Argyle piled on the pressure to get another goal. Howe shot well with skill, a great chance to get a fourth goal.
When the final whistle blew, Plainmoor was again filled with cheers as this 39 year drought ended as we beat Argyle 3-1. The Yellow Army went mad and didn’t stop singing until all the players went back into the temporary dressing rooms for the last time. Plymouth did have a few chances to score at the end of the 2nd half, but they didn’t cause us too much danger and we throughly deserved to win the game by this margin. We showed everyone that there is only one proper team in Devon! We go on to play Port Vale on Friday.

Olejnik 9 – Bobby always put in 100% effort and he played well today again. I think his overall play was good today.
Oastler 8.5: I think Joe had a solid performance. He tackled well and linked up well when coming forward. I do remember a mistake at the back from him, but that can’t dampen his performance too much.
Ellis 9: Even though he is an Argyle fan he didn’t show any favouritism to the club he supports as he played very well. He headed and cleared the ball really well. He also linked up with men around him at times.
Saah 4: He was substituted early on and he didn’t do anything special for the time he was on.
Nicholson 8: Nico played well again today. He didn’t do anything stupid at the back and looked comfortable at the back.
Mansell 8: Manse put in his usually 100% effort again. He did make some silly mistakes at the back at times; however he linked up well with the players around him and got stuck in as always!
Lathrope 8.5: I though Damon had a solid game today. He played well linking up with the players around him and passing well.
O’Kane 9: My MOTM also today, he was on fire coming forward. I have to say he did make some mistakes in the 1st half; however he took his goal very well and looked class again!
Bodin 8: I thought Billy used his skill quite well today. He looked strong and skilful; he also linked up with the players around him.

O'Kane was the obvious MOTM and his goals (especially the 2nd) were breathtaking but I would like to mention how well I thought Lathrope played today. I have given this guy plenty of stick in the past but I thought he was great today and played the role given to him in the team perfectly.

Great result today and I retun to Plymouth a happy man. We were not great in the first half, but in the second half we played some nice football. O'Kane's second was magnificent! I only wish it could have been scored against the scum.
Been on Argyle website - shame they cannot give us any credit.Some are so deluded - fancy losing to' little Torquay' - a disgrace! I guess size matters no matter how good your team actually is!! They were poor today in terms of ability and tactic- but thats their problem.

Cheers Danny et al for the match reports. Cracking win today but out of most games this season it is one i expected to us to win. That said the lads still had to go out there and get the job done and what a roll we are now on. I still have to bear in mind what a cambridge fan said on here a few weeks ago when we were struggling, he said Lings tenure at the Abbey was one of strings of defeats and poor performances followed by unbeaten runs and so on so i'm not getting too carried away. However Ling has turned us around in dramatic fashion, unrecognisable from the team that lost at Shrewsbury, Bradford and Southend in terms of performance and attitude and todays win enables us to keep the ball rolling onto Vale Park on friday night.
Strangely enough it was Pope Gregory the 9th inviting me for drinks aboard his steam yacht, the saucy sue currently wintering in montego bay with the England cricket team and the Balanese Goddess of plenty.
