The Chief Constable for Scotland has admitted that political pressure from UKIP’s campaign to prevent the Scottish police regularly carrying glock automatic pistols has been successful.

UKIP MEP David Coburn who led the campaign warned “we must police by consent”. “We don’t want to turn Pittenweem into Dodge City. An unarmed police force being a proud British boast and the SNP’s attempt to create a foreign, less tolerant, authoritarian Scotland is not the gentle Scotland that we know and love.“

David Coburn also criticised other SNP authoritarian measures such as abolishing corroboration and the Named Person act which appoints a state guardian for every child in Scotland with the right to interfere in private family life.

This illiberal act was passed with the support of Labour and the abstention of the Tories in the Scottish Parliament.

The SNP want to change Scotland in an authoritarian way incompatible with the traditions of the Scottish people and UKIP’s libertarian values which are old fashioned Scottish Values.

This is very good news, and many different groups, organisations, and individuals in Scotland had campaigned against this.

What is unusual is that the Chief Constable has apparently openly admitted that it was 'political pressure' that he bowed to in making this change to operational procedure. Even more surprising, and wrong in my view, is that he should specify that the political pressure from one group was any more successful in making him change his mind than the representations he received from anyone else on this specific matter.

Given Gullscorers usual readiness to provide a link, it's disappointing that one directing us to the Chief Constable's admission, in order that we could study his words for ourselves, wasn't forthcoming on this occasion.

News we might not have heard is one thing, but misleading or disingenuous claims from a UKIP Press Officer should remain quite another.

Joe you are right to point out the shortcomings of my previous post. I normally try to provide links to other sources of news, but was extremely tired on this occasion; I happened to see the item on the UKIP website and felt it important enough to post without thinking of anything else but getting to sleep a.s.a.p.

Claims from any political party should of course always be taken with a pinch of salt. The same goes for the media, pressure groups, quangos and other official sources, who can all be occasionally disingenuous, inaccurate or misleading, sometimes deliberately so.

One Scottish paper referred to a campaign by an 'independence group' without specifically mentioning UKIP or any other party. There is no reason to doubt UKIP's campaign, led by their first Scottish MEP David Coburn, but the Scottish Liberal Democrats are also known to have similarly campaigned. In any event, a good day for democracy.

I managed to find these links:

Ideally, of course, for the reasons given above, people should undertake their own searches and research to check the accuracy of any report from any source and, hopefully, post their findings on this forum as you have done..

Last month India put a space probe into orbit around Mars.

The $74 million cost of this mission was less than the budget of the movie Gravity.

The Europe of Freedom and Direct Democracy (EFDD) group, one of the main Eurosceptic groups in the European Parliament, which includes Britain's UKIP, has been dissolved by the EU.

A spokesman for the European Parliament, Jaume Duch, tweeted the news: "Latvian MEP Iveta Grigule left #EFDD group today. #EFDD no longer has members from at least 7 countries, so declared dissolved today."

It is not yet clear whether this is a result of bribery or coercion or threats by the EU on the Latvian MEP. What is clear is that Iveta Grigule is a passionate Euro-sceptic who would not take such an action on a mere whim. If there were strong personal reasons she would also have resigned as an MEP, and she has not done so.
