Oh no, she's a religious extremist? That is disappointing news, she was shaping up to be a nice girl.
True fact, 50% of my RE teachers are now convicted predatory paedophiles. None of my science teachers is.

The online Oxford Dictionaries states:
It is sometimes held that none can only take a singular verb, never a plural verb: none of them is coming tonight rather than none of them are coming tonight. There is little justification, historical or grammatical, for this view. None is descended from Old English nÄn meaning ‘not one’ and has been used for around a thousand years with both a singular and a plural verb, depending on the context and the emphasis needed
so if you're referring to plural science teachers, I reckon you should use the plural :are. But it's a long time since I've been so grammatical !!!!!

None is treated as if it were spoken (or written) as 'not one' as TL has shown above. Some people get precious about it, I prefer to use whichever is likely to sound best, except here, where I used the one which would prompt Phil's response. There's no right or wrong answer here (as is the case with most grammatical 'rules), so I was being a little devious when I said Phil was 'wrong'. Still, it's served its purpose, hopefully someone has learned something.
Also, I'm glad to hear that Mrs H is a teacher rather than a preacher.

I've been going to the home games for the ladies and thought it was time they had their own thread.
If you're at a loose end on a Sunday afternoon, really do come down and watch them.
The football isn't always up to much, the opposition are always completely outclassed and it's never much of a contest, but it is really good fun.
In truth, I'm being critical about the football to avoid the usual boring old shit about my wearing yellow specs in relation to the club. No, it isn't men's standard, it's not really even schoolboy level, but that's down to an altogether different level of aggression and playing style than a lack of ability. In the game against Bude on Sunday, there were more goals than free kicks. There was no play acting, no diving, arguing with the ref, no old rubbish. It was Lovely.
All of our players are possessed of a level of ability, but a couple really stand out. The winger, Baker, has a decent cross, the left back Adele Rogers now weighs about two tonne, on account of having half the opposition strikers in her back pocket and, for me, the real star of the show is the centre forward, Laura Gough. Her touch would be enough to see her past the majority of defenders she faces, but she combines that with devastating pace which allows her to blitz past people as if they're standing still. Those I haven't mentioned by name are not without their own charms. The only one I can't really judge is the goalkeeper. She's had so little to do in the games I've seen that I really couldn't say whether she was in line for an England call up, or the weakest link.
Sunday's game was an FA Cup affair against Bude Town. There is an article on the OS (Bix, I'm on my phone so can't really do a link, perhaps you could oblige?) which outlines the performance neatly.
I Tweeted at half time that it was only wasteful forward play which stopped it being double figures by the break. Despite getting some stick for that, I maintain my stance. It's not a criticism of the players, far from it, it's testament to the fact that we created at least 15 very presentable chances in the first half that we could afford to be so profligate in the box. It was a siege from the first whistle to last and, aside from not taking our chances, it was a compete performance. Bude, quite literally did not have a shot of any value all game. Action areas were approximately 90% in Bude's defensive third and, such was our dominance that even the centre back Randi (not sure of her surname) managed to waltz through most of their team in the style of George Best and crack a shot from 18 yards which beat the keeper all ends up, only them to crash against the bar and away. If it had gone in (and I'm really not joking) it would have been the best goal I'd seen all weekend.
The only disappointment for me is that they are forced to play on a truly horrific Ipplepen pitch. It's quite possible that the errant finishing from yesterday was down, almost exclusively, to the state of the pitch. It was rock hard, the grass was all sorts of lengths, it was completely uneven and awfully bobbly all over. The goal mouths were made of coarse sand and one goal line was three feet lower than its corresponding 6 yard line (almost definitely the reason that Randi's shot hit the bar, rather than flying in).
It might be nice to see Devon FA make their Coach Road pitch available.
Next game is at home to a team whose name I can't spell. Sunday, 1400 kick off, Ipplepen FC. Ample parking, cheap club house and the likelihood of watching a Torquay United side win by five or more clear goals.

Link above, surprise surprise I was an assistant referee yesterday for the game- they didn't need to be at their best and could have had 5 before the half ended. Well described above.

Which lino were you? Did you run the line nearest the clubhouse, or furthest from it?

I've always been a fan of the women's game so I'm trying to follow our new team the best I can. Twitter seems to be the only way to do that at the moment which works well enough but it's hard to get that much serious info in 140-character bits and pieces. Would love to see more info on the team on the club OS. Would it be so hard to put up a roster at least so we can have some idea who these ladies are? A Torquay United team that scores a bunch of goals and wins every game? Let's embrace this.

You'll have to select 'Western Division' from the drop down menu to see stuff about our girls. Our next opponents in the FA Cup are Swindon from the Premier League. They're a division above us, but they've got a record of P4 W2 D2 L0 F7 A1. That looks impressive, but our girls are on P4 W4 D0 L0 F18 A2. They did win their last game (the FA Cup) 16-0.
I'm sure they're lovely, but they don't look as though they'll score enough to beat us and they don't look as though they'll do enough at the back to prevent our front line from netting a few. As Y4 has confirmed, we really could have had any number. We won't be so wasteful again. Swindon could be in for a shock and I'm really looking forward to it.

been following a few of these women on the old twitter. Glad they're doing well - always felt that the club would benefit from having a women's side. Matt, what sort of pyramid system is in place? Presumably TULFC could go to the Premier division of this SWWFL, but what happens after that? is there an upwards path?

I'm not sure, to be honest, Haps. Presently, they are in a regional set-up, playing, as they do, in the South West league. I guess that beyond that is a national level, but whether the club could afford to support such a move is not clear. As an example of the money situation, they won their FA Cup game yesterday and collected £125 from the prize pot. They then had to give out £150 to the officials (so far as I know, perhaps Y4 could confirm or deny?) I did once hear of a situation which Plymouth Ladies faced, where they had an FA Cup game away to Newcastle. The club refused to foot their £3000 bill for coach hire and a hotel and what-not. Credit to PASOTI, they clubbed together and raised the money. Sadly, the girls game at our level isn't making any money, there's no entry fee, there's hardly any prize money, there's just no cash in the game at all. It seems odd that the club charge for kids games and reserve matches, but don't allow Plainmoor to be used on a Sunday to host the women and charging a couple of quid to get in. The bar could be opened, the entry fee could be utilised and the girls could have a professional pitch on which to play. Admittedly, at the moment, the gate receipts would amount to about £20, but that might well grow substantially if the games are properly promoted.
I'll have a play on Google and see if I can find the official pyramid.

Counties league- step 6 (Devon)
Regional (Step 4/5) Division 1 West and then South West Premier
Combination (step 3) South west combination (Plymouth and Exeter currently here)
National Division (Step 1/2) FA Women's Premier League + FA Women's Super League Premier League (The top- Arsenal+Liverpool etc)

Ah, I remember you. Who was the pissed old lady stood by the halfway line?
I've just managed to find the pyramid, but it had to come from Wiki (I was trying to avoid that, hence it took me so long). We're step 6 at present, but we're looking like run away winners of the division, so step 5 (assuming it's an auto promotion thing and there are no off-field things which might hold us back) next year. The way we're making a mockery of our current division, it's not too much of a step to guess that we might earn auto promotion from that to step 4 as well. Step 4 basically splits the country into quarters. We'd be in the bottom left quarter, appropriately named the South West Combination. From there, it follows the men's structure in so far as it splits the country in half longitudinally at Birmingham, so we'd be in the Southern Premier. Step 2 is the Premier National (like the Conference is a national division), then it's step 1 which is the Women's Super League (home to Arsenal and others). Presently, we look like a step 4 side. Exeter and Plymouth both play there, as do Portsmouth Uni.
If I remember correctly, I know of a girl who plays for Pompey Uni and she's meant to be shit hot.
