Who keeps voting for defeats, it keeps reminding me of present times, I thought that on this thread I'd be able to happily read of the good old days and forget our woes!

It's not been mentioned yet but just look at that pitch, matches were played in all sorts of conditions in those days. How many of our postponed matches would have been cleared and out of the way by now if the same 'rules' applied today? We've all gone soft.

And this wasn't some non-league mudbath either, Coventry were an established top-flight club. Can you imagine a Premier League ground with a pitch like that?

Ha, Gateman, my sentiments entirely. However, this thread is very subjective and memorable to some for reasons of not to do with the quality of the game. If so I would have put Torquay v.Notts County September 1979 which we lost 1-0 and was by a stretch the worst refereeing I have ever seen. He needed a police escort off the pitch and not sure if he officiated again.

Some of the obscurer games in here are also down to people who are unable to attend as many matches as they'd like, due to living away and so on. I understand that you'd think the top 100 would be all great wins, but as I've previously said, some of these earlier games will be influenced by other factors rather than just the result. I have just checked through the rest of the list, and there are still 8 of the remaining games that United lost (some of which I can fully understand why they're included...others not so!!).

All I can promise is that it SHOULD be the reason for some interesting debate.

This is a great thread, thoroughly enjoying it. Perhaps after tomorrow Boreham Wood away will make it into my next top ten.

It's the only time (in 51 years of going to TUFC matches) that I was forced to line up before getting in and be controlled by dogs and horses - not to mention policemen.

I was also there with my two lads. Great day out and we gave a good account of ourselves. Until the final 20 minutes or so when I think our lads began to tire, it looked as if we were going to bring them back to Plainmoor for a replay. Who was the Coventry 'keeper ? I seem to recall he was one of the top keepers of his day - was it Ron Springett? Whoever it was, he was the busier of the two 'keepers. When you read through some of these teams from the past, it brings a lump to the throat to think how far we've fallen ...... :'(

I was 11 when I watched this game with my dad. I don't remember seeing my dad and his friends so worked up before about a referee performance. Another thing that sticks in the mind is the amazing performance by the notts county goalkeper raddy something?

That Lincoln one was mine.

I had travelled over for it at the last minute as I was supposed to have been working that day, but my shifts changed. I spent a fortune on a last minute flight, and came to the ground with the Gulls in a fine run of form.

Darren Garners goal that day is one I will not forget for a long time, and certainly made the trip over worthwhile - though the two last minute goals left me somewhat deflated!!

So, basically this one is in as the goal was magnificent, and I also really didn't want to put my first match ever down - a 4-0 drubbing at home by Plymouth!!

JOINT 89th: Torquay United 2 - 1 Oxford United - 1982/83

FA Cup 3rd Round - Replay
12th January 1983
Plainmoor
Attendance:

An FA Cup 3rd Round replay is next up. Oxford were in the old 3rd Division with us a league below them. Prior to the initial meeting, our form was a bit patchy while the O's had won 5 league games in a row over Christmas. A 1-1 draw in Oxford (I assume at their old Manor Ground?), saw the game return to Plainmoor four days later. United edged their higher opponents out in a 2-1 win, to progress to Round 4. The cup run ended there, as Sheffield Wednesday beat us 3-2 at Plainmoor. Wednesday went on to reach the semi-finals of the Cup that year.

Message to Oldcodgers: sorry, Gents, you are right. I didn't vote for the 3-1 cup win over Aston Villa, but the away league win.
Also, looking at the line-ups for the more recent (i.e. after 1972) matches I notice that (in my opinion) the SECOND worst ever United player is there: (Worst: Mark Coombe; SECOND WORST: Lee Andrews.)

Lee Andrews is far far away from that.

JOINT 89th: Aldershot Town 0 - 3 Torquay United - 2007/08

Our first away match as a non-league club is next up. Aldershot were one of the bigger sides in the division, and so this was to be a test for United, especially after our goalless draw with Grays Athletic on the opening day. However, United passed through with flying colours, running up a superb 3-0 victory. Tim Sills opened the scoring before Zebroski and then substitute Danny Stevens added the gloss to the scoreline. However, Aldershot had the last laugh as they ended up romping to the League title, which was effectively won at Plainmoor in March thanks to a last minute winner.
