Chris Hargreaves released Downes, who in fact had the most defensive clearances of any player in the conference last season, because he (CH) wants more pace at the back, and we're talking about Nicho and Baldwin. From slow to dads army springs to mind :)

:goodpost:
I actually think releasing Downes was a big mistake!

I agree with SWgull, every player has their faults but the amount of times I've seen Downes put in a goal-saving block suggests to me that we're going to miss him.

The amount of times I've seen Downes be directly responsible for us conceding a goal would suggest the opposite.

We have a good aggressive centre back in macdonald. What we need is a new Brian Sarah type to play with him; cool, calm, sweeping up any mess, quicker than Downes, bit of experience would be nice.

Gillingham have released 4 including CB Leon Legge. He'd be decent at this level and no stranger to non-league.

Also, MIllwall have released 18 players including CB Jake Goodman who was on loan at AFC Wimbledon last season.

Interesting that Millwall have offered another deal to Marquis. He feels like their version of Ash Yeoman with the number of deals he gets without ever quite breaking through. I guess they are looking at a season in league one though.

Brian Saah was mentioned above - he is a player I would take back. I would imagine he could be in danger at D&R as he was on loan to Woking at the end of the season, and could drop to our level. I seem to remember though that one of the reasons he wanted to leave was to be closer to London, so probably a none starter.

Assuming we still have a team if the story on another thread is to be believed, Peterborough have released a decent keeper today - Bobby Olejnik.

I don't think he'll have much trouble finding a new job, as much as I'd love to have him back.

Some decent names released by Yeovil, including local lad Kieffer Moore. Unfortunately the fact he is young and had two decent seasons at Championshp/L1 level despite the relegation should put him well outside what we could go for.

Some average squad fillers who could do a job at Conf level though - Ralph, Twumasi, Davis etc

That ends any chance of a windfall then as we included a sell-on fee when we sold him to Posh. I think he was voted their POTS last year but his stock must have fallen rapidly as he's had a couple of loan spells away from London Road. We can only dream of having a keeper of his quality in the near future! I'm sure he'll get fixed up with a L1/2 side.

We should be looking at players from Conference South/North who fancy an upgrade as our budgets may well be slashed again if this takeover doesn't happen.

The clubs current flat line status will not attract players
The clubs location will not attract a large number of players
The clubs budget will ensure we cannot afford a lot of players

Worrying times ahead.

Kadell Daniel has been released by Charlton. He looked like a decent player in the few games he played for us. I'm sure CH will be offering him something if he can.

Indeed, but think we will have trouble attracting anybody whilst the off field situation is so uncertain.

I agree with the idea of looking at lower league players but I think we will struggle to attract most players. If they are part time and have another job I would imagine they will be earning more than we could offer as a pro wage. Given our current position in the league pyramid and our location, I doubt there would be may players willing to drop a wage and relocate for a chance to be a pro footballer at Torquay. We have already seen with Seabright that part time football and full time job can be more appealing than being a squad player with Torquay.

A lot of people keep moaning that clubs with smaller budgets are able to perform better, but they have a massive advantage of location, particularly at this level. People tend to underestimate how much it counts against us. Central located and London clubs on a lower wage with no relocation or as a part time option are going to be more appealing.

i think the story there is that he wouldnt sign the reduced contract posh offered him, so they loaned him out, they're a club who won't be held to ransom apparently
