How many times have you seen Cheltenham play at home this season?
Keep your panties on, Parry, it's not a criticism, it's an observation. Every time we play there, Chelts have a way of playing that I just don't like. Like I said, I can't put my finger on it, I just really don't like it.

Kernow, I can indeed. The two comments are independent of each other. Irrespective of anything else, they're a one man band who would be absolutely nothing without "the Davids effect" (getting 50 free kicks a game they don't deserve, getting opponents consequently booked and sent off, having some vague quality from set pieces etc). The rest of the club is totally standard L2 fare, this division is such a mush of mediocrity this year, that each team is pretty much identical to every other.
The difference between playoffs and relegation this season is not any real difference in quality, it's a slice of luck, a little individual brilliance in one or two games and other odd things. If I hadn't known who we were playing yesterday and you'd told me it was Bradford (or Southend, or Exeter, or anyone else up there), I'd have believed you.

Any more questions from the floor, or shall we wrap this thing up and go for a beer?

Matt.

brucie wrote:In all fairness to Barnet they were not any worse than any other league 2 side in my opinion. Up until the first goal we were the better side but as soon as we went one up we started to panic. Oastler trying to clear the ball from the right back position somehow manage to cross the ball into our own penalty area.
Both sides gave their all and understandably it was nervy at the end - there was more pressure on us than Barnet. We would have been all but down if we had not won.
On another night we might have scored six though. Howe and Benyon were excellent all night - Barnet couldn't cope with either of them.
I am not a fan of Lathrope but thought he was good last night.
At 3-1 it looked for all the world game over but we never win a game easily. Their second goal stemmed form an attemted clearance from Oastler which cannoned straight into a teamates arse which just goes to show how we shoot ourselves in the foot at times.
Poke was rock solid all night - thank god it rained on saturday.
We still have it all to do but there is a huge carrot on the end of saturdays game. Win that one and we are staying up.
We just have to match what other teams at the bottom do and win an away game. In Howe,Benyon and Bodin we have the strikers who can do damage.
Its a big chance for us to put this season to bed.
See, when you're not trying to be a moron for the attention, you get things right.

How Davids reckons they deserved to win that match is totally beyond me. They scored one (possibly two) offside goal(s) and Poke made two saves. Hardly the manner in which teams win matches.

just seen the goals on sky.

for their first goal, there wasnt one player offside - there was four FFS! :@

second was just about ok.

as for hot-shot bodins goal - well the keeper could have thrown his cap on that!

I've just done the same thing Supes and you're right, four of them a couple of yards offside. I wouldn't mind, but the lino had the 18 yard line to look along. Simply dreadful officiating as per bleedin' usual. 2nd may or may not have been offside, but regardless, it was a ropey old bounce that could have gone anywhere and ended up at the feet of their top scorer.
Barnet still arguing they should have got something from last night. Really not sure what game they watched, but it certainly wasn't one from which they deserved anything.

Not sure what the keeper did for Billy's goal, got down to it in good time, then just laid and watched it roll past him, pure comedy gold.

well all i can say after that game, watching this side is like footballs version of masochism. its like you know something is so bad for you and a potential danger for your health and mental state, you know it hurts and you shouldnt do it but you just cant help it because on the other hand its just so much fun and you love it so much, it gets the blood pumping, the adreniline coursing through your veins and produces those magic moments of sheer joy which make you let out a primal scream and punch the air. :)

i was a bloody wreck by the end, indeed i thought i was going to be sick a couple of times, i thought what the hell are they trying to do to me, what the hell am i doing to myself.it was worth it though.

what a battling, determined, gritty performance that was. as a spectacle it wasnt the best football match you will ever see but at least 9 players performed really well and gave their all. if they give it that much in the next 2 games we should be fine.

im not too concerned that we conceded 2 goals against barnet because the first was definitely offside and the second im pretty sure would have been chalked off for it most days also. :@

i havent seen the team as often as usual this season and have read much criticism. i felt last night that there is so much potential there. there were a few times they tried to play football and put some good passes together but there is just something lacking, to be fair the game was pretty much played at 100 miles an hour and it was hard to settle into a pattern. there is definitely something there though, perhaps a bit more width and pace would make the difference.

thought mansell and downes were immense last night and benyon must get a mention for working his nuts off. i think we would see more from bodin if we got the ball down more and played it wide to him, he cant be expected to do much if the ball is just pinged in the air up the middle all the time. maybe play him in a more central striking role next season if needed just to see what he can do.

there was 1 player i felt had a shocker and definitely does not warrant a place in the side, indeed, every time the ball came near his position i feared the worst and indeed i was right. both goals came from his side.i wont name anyone or really point fingers until at least april 28th.

the crowd supported and got behind the team really well, nice to note i didnt hear any negativity or getting on players backs (see it works).not one of the most vintage nights ive had at plainmoor and the crowd were a bit quieter than i expected at times (although they were very good) but still a cracking, enjoyable night. :-D :-D

it will be one of my most memorable games though because as i posted before it was my lads first match, its took me a long time to get him interested to go. as we were approaching the ground and we saw the buzz of supporters around the ground and near the turnstiles my dad turned to him and said wait until you get in there, you'll be hooked. then he went through the turnstile with my dad and i flashed back 26 years, major deja vu, i swear to god i had a tear in my eye. :'(

anyway when he saw and heard the crowds inside, the buzz, the players kicking about, the music, the smells from the food etc, the floodlights and taking in the atmosphere he loved it. he got right into the game and showed an enthusiasm for football that wasnt there before( thankyou god, or the team).mind you he did tell me to calm down/sit down a few times because i was embarrassing him(hee, hee).indeed he is now a fan/supporter and wants to go as much as we can, i did explain to him its not always like last night but he at least wants to go to the rovers game. this could make my life a lot easier on saturday afternoons. so we have a new supporter, chunkygulljunior. :)
You are my torquay, my only torquay, you make me happy when skies are grey, you'll never know, just, how much i love you, so don't take my torquay away.

Five minutes time added-on again last night-despite there being hardly any injuries or stoppages that I can remember.

Have the rules changed or something;at nearly every match at home recently five minutes have been added on at the end of the 90 minutes, when 2-3 minutes at most would have been justified.Even the five usually turns into 6 or 7-cranking up the tension to unbearable levels.

Great team performance and a much-needed result. Think we made it more tense for ourselves than necessary - although the officials didn't help (especially the Popside linesman). Not sure I've ever been that worried at a game before!

Can anyone remember the "absolute sitter" that Jon Nurse apparently missed for Barnet in injury time? Their fans are absolutely slating him for it but I can't remember them having any great chances that were missed.

Nerve wracking was an understatment for last nights game.

Most of the lads pulled their finger out and played well.

Saah was superb, a real match winner last night. Still rate him as one of best in this division.
Lathrope and manse did well. Pressuring and winning 2nd balls. And passing nicely!

Jarvis busted a gut as usual. Give him a contract.

Brief appearance but it was good to see Knill at last utilise a forward option and bring on a fresh pair of legs in Yeoman last night.
Only on for five minutes but he did exceptionally well - he seems to be good at running with the ball, has filled out and seems a player with some potential to me.
Hope he gets a contract next year.

Fairly sure he was a direct replacement for Benyon and told to make a nuisance of himself upfront by chasing Barnet's defenders down, making runs etc. Looked reasonably strong and quick and did a decent job of holding the ball up in injury time.

The only time I've seen Yeoman play as a winger was in the second half at home to either Fleetwood or Rotherham when Taylor was in charge. I remember he did really well up front, but became completely ineffective when moved to the wing. Would like to see him given a 1-year extension as maybe third-choice striker - decent option from the bench.

Highlights up now: http://www1.skysports.com/watch/video/8 ... 3-2-barnet

As expected, Barnet's first goal was clearly offside - Hyde and two others were caught offside by our defence stepping up as Davids took the free-kick. The only reason I can see for the linesman's confusion is Joe Oastler was very late to step up, but Hyde was still offside.
