FT 6-2. Sounds like we played well and got a good display to move into the Burton game.

From the sounds of it palmer had a shocker from when he came on, giving away the penalty and few mistakes that lead to a goal.
Apart from the Kee, Atenio, Howe and Mcphee all score goals. Nice to see the strikers score even if they were a pentalky, and 1 yard tap ins.

I'll probably get panned for saying this, but I think that's a very positive result.

If that was an FA cup 1st round tie, that would have been on tv. Truro are a side on a crest of a wave and with a handy squad for their level. To turn them over like that so close to the reap action starting is pretty good going.

Not saying that we're world beaters, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Truro fighting for the playoffs in BSS next season. If we're knocking 6 past them, I think it would suggest that we're looking o.k for a solid season.

Agree Jeff especially as Bristol Rovers struggled to beat Gloucester City 3-2. Seems like it took agreat save from Scott Bevan 2 minutes from time to prevent a 3-3 draw.
Martin Ling has made a very good impression in a few short weeks. Most importantly he has clearly earned the respect of the players.

Positives:

The goals we conceded were both excellent. Certainly no team in our division would have prevented either in identical circumstances.
We WOULD have conceded more had Bevan been in goal. Bobby made two (one very good) saves of the sort which Bevs is simply incapable of making.
We really do have two starters for every position (McPhee counts twice, you'll see why in the negatives).
Billy Kee and his ability to half cheat to win a penalty, then justify it after the match.
JOastler, the guy is brilliant, I'll accept no opinions on this.
Goals from all over the place, particularly Atieno, who proved that he can shoot into an open goal from 6 yards on an angle.

Negatives:
Rene Howe's unreliable finishing.

Danny fecking Stevens. The only player today who didn't shine. Fecking crap and out of ideas beyond running about like a headless chicken.

More later, perhaps.

Matt.

Portugull,
Whilst I think your result today was a very good one I do not see how you can compare to our result against Gloucester City. The only comparison that can be made between us (and I dont think it can be compared)is that we both played Burnley who we totally outplayed and you lost 3-1. We have, like yourselves, had a very good build up to the season but that counts for nothing now and its how you perform from now on.The important thing from todays games in particular was to get through with no injuries. As regards the goalkeepers you can only really compare them over a season of COMPETITIVE games. it is going to be a very interesting season and I am sure that both our clubs will suffer ups and downs over the course of it.Good luck.

Danny Stevens running around like a headless chicken and no idea what to do with the ball? Thats not like him. I,ve always been a devout advocate of his intricate dribbling ability and the way in which he consistently bamboozles defenders and goes on to produce telling pinpoint crosses from the byeline for our strikers to finish with majesty and aplomb. I was shocked that Martin only offered the boy a one year extension as he is a yet undiscovered talent which will be realised this year when he takes all before him and goes on to become that quicksilver footy wizard we all know he can be and ultimately seal a deal to one of the Prem giants. <3 In Danny we trust!! HANG ON, I'm sobering up a bit now, ooooooohhhhhhhhh Octopussy! Thats better. Before i continue my severely restrictive booze binge, restrictive because i can only drink Austrian lagers such as Zipfer, Ottakringer, Stiegl, Schwecater and other fine brews from the Motherland and i can only buy them from an outlet in Bakewell. Have you tried the boring shit that many punterws drink like Kronenbourg, Fosters, Carling and Carlsberg? They all taste like piss :red: , and if any one on this forum actually drinks Carling and enjoys it then i suggest you have a word with your GP to refer you to a pysychologist! Anyway, Preseason has gone really well and if nothing else we have got some fitness into our lads and got some confidence going into Saturdays game vs Burton. I don't want to tempt fate but i will be a bit disappointed if we cannot beat Burton. :scarf:

I feel going on our game against Burnley will be abit silly really, it was a mixed side with most of the players playing a few days before against Exeter not having a run out untill the end.

But anyways, Pre season is pre season we all try diffrent things and not all work. Thats the whole idea is to practise and get fit.
Today we out played a decent BSS side and wouldnt suprise me if they was in the BSP next season. Our squad has plenty of talent and i feel we will shock a few sides.

Its a long old season and we have good depth, will be intresting to see how we both fair on first game of the season.

I understand Plymouth beat Truro 2-1 in their recent pre-season friendly at Home Park. But these pre-season games don't really signify a thing regarding the campaigns ahead and come 6 August will all be forgotten. Still, both Bristol Rovers and Torquay United supporters probably have reason to be optimistic about the season, but I fear Argyle's pre-occupation with the survival of the club will have a negative effect on their promotion ambitions, if only indirectly or financially; a mid-table finish for them I'm afraid.

I dont look on it that you will shock a few sides because in all honesty I think a lot of sides will see you as genuine contenders after last season. You have made some decent signings and I believe i am right in saying that you have only lost Branston,Zeb and Bevan from your actual players. Many teams in League 2 who struggled last season have only signed a few players,if any and it will be those clubs who it would be a shock to lose to. As regards our first games I know I would much rather have your start to ours and it would not surprise me if you are top of the table on the 6th august.

True enough, but if you add Stanley, Tomlin and Robinson to that list then it shows we lost over half of our side that did so well after the loan window closed.

I'm delighted with the signings made by Martin Ling though and somehow we do seem to have a stronger but more importantly a well balanced squad. One of the major criticisms (justifiably so) of Buckle during his tenure with us was that the squad was always seemingly missing specialist players in a couple of positions, that resulted in him playing a number of players out of their natural and preferred role within the team.

I'll be happy with mid-table and anything better will be a huge bonus considering it's a time when we're trying to consolidate as a club both on and off the pitch.

I think when you consider that Truro drew 2.2 with Yoevil, and narrowly lost 2.1 away at Argyle, this redgardless of being a p.s.f ,can only be taken as a great result,Truro are no mug's we all know that ,i am looking forward to Saturday all the more now.

Decent little day out. Truro have a tidy set-up and it's always good to have a beer on the terraces with no segregation.

First time looking at the new squad under Ling, some brief musings below.

Olejnik looked solid enough, he doesn't seem to have any major weaknesses. Rice wasn't on the pitch long enough to judge but he got a warm reception from both sets of fans.

Can only agree with previous thoughts regarding Oaster. He looks very much at home at right-back and I think he'll make that spot his own this season. Got forward well and looked composed throughout. Saah and Robertson look like the first choice CB pairing and in the absense of Branno it's obvious Robbo has took on the mantle of being the 'vocal' one at the back. For all his supposed leadership qualities Saah doesn't say an awful not, but he reads the game well enough and as a pairing they compliment each other well. Ellis looks set to start the season as first reserve and not many clubs in this division will have such a good defender sitting on the bench most weeks. One criticism I've always had of Ellis is for all his brave and battling qualities I do wish he wouldn't come charging in full pelt all the time, if he doesn't win that header/tackle we're left very exposed at the back. Nicho was Nicho, one of the first names on the teamsheet and solid as always. LRT has a way to go before challenging for that left-back spot imo, he's a good athlete but give me Nicho's knowhow and experience any day of the week.

Macklin was quiet, though in fairness to him he didn't see much of the ball and never got a clear run at their full-back. He was tidy enough though and I'd like to see him get a good run in the team - we desperately need to inject some pace in the side. Mansell gave an all-action display in midfield and looks the best option for that ball-winner role in the middle of the park. O'Kane was the best player on the pitch by a country mile and it's clear he's going to be key for any success we have. Constantly coming deep, giving an option, recycling possession. Seldom did he take the wrong option with the ball and when he got himself forward he showed great composure in the final third. He is class, a joy to watch and I'll be shocked if he's here past January. Morris looked a good enough player on the left, he reminds me of Carlisle in that he's solid enough at everything without being a match-winner in his own right. He gives balance to that left-hand side though, tracks back well, has a decent cross and I'd much rather have someone like Morris as opposed to Stevens, who is still woeful. His decision making and lack of discipline hasn't improved and I don't know why we gave him two years. A good bench option if we need a goal but nothing more, he should never be trusted to start football matches. McPhee played a couple of different positions and looked alright, took his goal well. Lathrope scored a nice long range strike with his first touch. Halpin didn't have enough time to impress really. A loan move with a recall clause might be beneficial for him at this point, just so he can get a run of games.

Howe impressed me. He's a chunky fella but I think that's his natural build. I'd worry if we started him together with Kee as they're both very similar players who like to play with their back to goal. Atieno looked OK but being honest he's not going to hit double figures this season and won't trouble FL defences. I think we need a striker with a bit of pace who can play on the shoulder of the last defender, but that's me being picky.

Overall I reckon we'll be alright. Despite the six goals its in attack where I'm most concerned. It's no coincidence that Oastler, Robertson and O'Kane were the three players to play a full 90 yesterday - on yesterday's evidence they looked the best players we have and they are a good base to work from.
