sorry but you are totally wrong.Northampton Fans dont have a clue. Paul Buckle wass completely right in his post match interview. We TOTALLY outplayed Northampton in the first half and they could not have moaned if they had been 3-0 down.Second half they came back at us but did not create chances like you did against us and after they got the luckiest equaliser possible we hit the post twice as well as scored the winner. Their supporters are a sad bunch and made no noise whatsoever, mind you there wasnt very many of them!! Cant really understand why they have made these comments as Buckle was complimentary of their team and Manager in the pre match interview as was Gary Johnson about us. Sour grapes I think.

Sorry but I wasn't really fussed about the comments in relation to the game itself as I didn't see it so have no point of reference.

It was just interesting reading some of the comments as they really ring true from B*ckles time with us when all he would do is talk nonsense about how amazing we were when we'd played like Argyle! Its been really refreshing hearing Lingys comments after the Shots game about how the performance wasn't up to scratch. Had that been the cretin still in charge he would be waxing lyrical about how well we played and he is clearly the natural successor to Pep Guardiola!

I spotted the Northampton thread aswell :) , not having a go at anyone here i put it on the banter board earlier on, so to avoid another gulls/gashead shoot out on the main board.

Back to the thread, Martin Ling's yellow army :scarf: :scarf:

Still early days, I know, and I'm still not totally convinced that he's the right man for the job, but I just wanted to bring up the point about Ling, and his seemingly great ability (so far) to realise how a game needs changing and then to actually make those changes. It is incredibly refreshing to see this, after four years where there was a reluctancy to change things, formations and subs etc. Take Saturday for example. After that first half, I thought we'd lose by the odd goal and it'd be boring as hell. ML realised we needed to step it up a bit, get more players forward, push Macclesfield back, so the idea to change from 4-4-2 to 4-2-1-3 with Morris in behind Macklin, McPhee and Atieno worked a treat.

Fair play, although as I said, it's still early, but so far, so good, Martin.

He won me over a long time ago, I don't think his efforts so far can be faulted, even allowing for Stevens playing ;-)

Pleasantly surprised. Players know where they stand with him, he doesn't take any nonsense and the results have been good. I haven't seen us really play well yet this season but then again i've only seen 3 games.

The main thing I've liked about Ling, his signings have all proven so far to be half decent and that they can contribute. Even the ones which the experts on here thought were useless before they'd even played this season.

I do agree with you that, we haven't played at the best we could this season and we find ourselfs 4th on 11 points from 6 games. Early days i know but i feel every gulls fan would have taken this start considering the doom and gloom attitudes from many over the summer.

If we can sort out our starts on games and not wait untill the 2nd half to play how we do then we could have a decent season. Then again, well done Lingy for getting the guys to go out and improve in the 2nd half after a poor start in the first.

Are you doing the matchday thread, Nick?

Matt.

Yeaaaa, well, it's a work in progress at the moment, but I'm going to work in about an hour so I doubt I'll get it done by then. Fancy doing the Cheltenham one though? :)

I certainly will.

Meanwhile, back on topic.

Does this whole 2nd half miracle thing suggest that Dinger does not know enough about the opposition prematch? Here's why... He sets out a stall based on what little he knows about the opposition. It's ineffective because he's got it slightly wrong. Fortunately, he is astute and quick enough to see where he has gone wrong and make the necessary changes at half time.
Perhaps, if he knew prematch what he appears to pick up on throughout the first half of matches, we would be able to play better for longer (ie, in the first half).
Do we think this is a fair assessment/assumption, or is there something I've missed?

Matt.

Cheers. Just a note to all, expect the match thread to be up either tonight or tomorrow night. :)

Really pleased with Ling so far. Repeatedly shown that he is able to identify problems and quickly fix them, both during a match and within the squad. (Billy Boden transfer). His solutions in game aren't always kneejerk (lots of half time subs) and are often things that we in the stands aren't spotting.
Also he seems to want to play good football, although their is a fair amount of long ball but thats OK seeing we have 2 excellent target men. The games where we have recovered to draw (Burton/Dagenham) we have played our way out of trouble rather than getting desperate and hoofing it.

Just need to sort out the defence and the generaly lukewarm 1st halfs

I think you may have something here Matt!

I remember reading something just after he arrived whereby he said he didn't have a use for a chief scout as he would use his contacts. "People will do it just for their expenses because they love the game" or something along those lines.

It certainly would explain why we need to tweak the team at half time before we start playing better.

A bit worrying really as imagine where we would be if we were playing for the full 90 every game! :keepie:

edit: 100 posts, woo hoo! :scarf:
