United are back at Plainmoor for the first of back-to-back home matches starting with Aveley FC on Saturday. Paul Wotton’s men return to home comforts looking for a fourth successive win, as Aveley visit looking for their first win of the season. You can watch Paul Wotton’s press call HERE. Who’s the boss? Danny Scopes is the former Concord Rangers manager that led the then National League South club to the FA Trophy Final in 2021. Prior to that achievement, he assisted co-managers the Cowley brothers at the Beachboys before taking charge in 2019. Scopes was appointed manager of Aveley in November 2021. The previous two seasons has seen the club achieve a great deal of success which started with gaining promotion to the National League South in 2022/23. Having beaten Canvey Island on penalties in the play-off semi-final, Aveley went on to beat Hornchurch in the final. Scopes led Aveley to their highest ever league finish last season when they made the end of season play-offs finishing in 7th position on 73 points. They were beaten by Maidstone United in the eliminator round 2-1. Player to Watch Image Charlee Hughes spent last season with the Millers and scored 14 times in 48 appearances, including a hat-trick against Hemel Hempstead earning his team a 4-3 victory.  Not just a goal scorer, he is credited with 4 assists last season. Hughes counts Brentwood Town and Malden & Tiptree among his former clubs where he was top goal scorer for both teams prior to his departure. He then joined Wealdstone, then Hemel Hempstead, before joining Aveley and helping them to the play-offs. How have they been doing? Aveley’s season started with a 1-0 defeat at Welling United, before earning a point in a 2-2 draw against Tonbridge Angels in the first home game of the season. A 1-0 home defeat to Hemel Hempstead followed, before another setback on the road beaten 2-1 by Eastbourne Borough. Aveley go into this fixture on the back of a 3-0 home defeat to current league leaders Slough Town.
